FSU Observations

Don't Forget the Daily Roundup

Observations as the Noles conclude their Pre-ACC schedule

By Colin

The next few weeks will be very significant for FSU, a program trying to prove that it is for real. FSU opens its ACC schedule at Clemson on January 4. In that game and immediately thereafter, the Basketblog should quickly get an impression of where FSU stands in comparison to the rest of the ACC. The Noles’ first eight conference games – four at home and four away, all between January 4 and February 1 - are against “middle-tier” type ACC teams. During that stretch, FSU plays Clemson twice, Virginia, once, and mostly avoids the ACC heavyweights (no Duke or Maryland, though they do play BC and UNC – feel free to take a peak at the Noles’ schedule/results).

FSU looked good against its annual collection of pre-season patsies, rolling up an 8-1 record, with only Nebraska (brief preview below) left on the pre-season schedule. Behind the numbers:

· Al Thornton has been the beast expected of him. He’s averaging 15 ppg and 7 rpg (in less than 22 minutes per game), with a silly 58.4 FG%, including 6-of-10 on threes (team stats from the school’s website are here, while espn.com’s stats, which have some additional and useful info about efficiency and production – i.e., points per shot - are here).

· Alexander Johnson has been a huge (and pleasant) surprise, with 12 ppg and 6 rpg. Most importantly, he has stayed out of foul trouble.

· Jason Rich has put up good numbers - 10 ppg, 4 rpg, 1.5 apg - but really isn’t that productive because he shoots ALL THE DAMN TIME (alert: I suspect my bitching about Rich’s shot selection and inefficiency will be a theme this year; he averages a horrible 1.13 points per shot and has a 1-to-1 asst/TO ratio, lousy for an alleged PG), hoisting a team-high 83 FG attempts and making only 47% (including team 22 three-point attempts, with only five makes) against inferior competition.

· The ancient Andrew Wilson is becoming useful on offense (for the first time in his career) finding a role as a three-point specialist. While the numbers are modest - 6 ppg in 15 min – he’s been efficient, hitting 12 of 23 threes (and attempted only 10 two-point FGs in the nine games).

· No one on the squad is averaging more even 26 minutes per, indicating that Coach Ham is using his depth, as expected.

Pessimists note that some warning flags have been raised. The non-conference schedule has been none-too-strong, including less-than-traditional-powers such as the Hatters (Stetson) and the Camels (Campbell). During this stretch, FSU struggled against Bowling Green and looked plain flat (and lazy) against (winless) Stetson, with just a one-point lead at the half before pulling away for a 75-57 win. FSU allowed 47.4% FG shooting in that game, though they did force 28 TOs. On the other hand, FSU followed that up by putting six in double figures against Campbell, with great offense (57.7% FG) and better defense (41.1% FG, 24 TOs for Campbell).

My impression is that the apparent fluxuations in focus can be expected as these young players work through the exam and holiday seasons. On the whole, I’d estimate that this is most focused and disciplined the Noles have been in a few years, and is a marked improvement from last year’s often aimless squad.

A fairly significant non-conference test is coming up on New Year’s Eve, as the Noles play Nebraska (in Sunrise, FL). While Nebraska might seem legit (as a 9-2 team from the Big 12), they aren’t. For proof, look no further than the Huskers’ loss at Creighton by 26, featuring a pathetic offensive effort where Nebraska’s turnover total (31) rivaled their point total (44). Read that again. Nebraska also scored close “wins” over such luminaries as Louisiana Tech (by three points) and Alabama A&M (seven points). Plus, Nebraska loses esteem in my book for the way that Alamo Bowl game ended against U of M.

Good teams should dispatch, fairly easily, pretenders such as Nebraska. And I think FSU is a “good” team. Expect a win, leaving the Noles with a 9-1 mark entering ACC play.

Looking ahead at the ACC season, the month of January, in which the Noles play their (previously-discussed and mostly-winnable) first eight ACC games, sets up as a make-or-break period. The second half of the conference schedule (which includes two games with Duke, trips to NC State, Miami, and Va Tech, and a home game with Maryland) is significantly harder than the first. And this squad has a history of unraveling as the season goes on and/or when faced with adversity (see, e.g., last year, when the Noles dropped eight of their last nine conference games). My early prediction – subject to revision, as are all of my predictions – is for two wins in the second half of the conference season.

As such, a quick start is imperative. Of its first eight ACC games, I think FSU needs at least five wins, and perhaps six, to establish itself as a legit NCAA tournament team……which I don’t see happening. Despite glimpses of turning the corner, FSU still doesn’t know how to win consistently (as evidenced by one, lonely road win in the last four ACC seasons). I say the Noles go 3-5 (maybe 4-4) over the first eight games.

At any rate, the ACC opener - a road game against an athletic and surprisingly effective (11-1) Clemson team - will be an interesting test, featuring two traditional doormats which are showing signs of life. I can’t bring myself to pick the Noles on the road, so I’ll go with Clemson to win a close game. But if the Noles manage “W” in Littlejohn, my perception of the character of this team (and their prospects for the season) might well change.

The ‘Noles are coming, Stacy. What say you?

Michigan Game

As some people guessed in the comments to the Daily Roundup, I do in fact have some thoughts about that Michigan game last night. First, the forward pass that was called a fumble was a botched call. Henne had control of the ball and his arm was clearly going forward. Second, there was a blown pass interference call on 4th down near the goal line that would've given Michigan a fresh set of downs and a first-and-ten. Finally, Nebraska should have been flagged for either unsportsmanlike conduct or too many men on the field when their entire sideline emptied during that final play.

But other than that the officiating was great.

And don't get me wrong, I was nominally rooting against Michigan last night because I am hoping for Lloyd Carr's ouster this offseason. It's just too bad he's lasted this long. Carr gets outcoached by OSU's Jim Tressel every year. He consistently loses to teams without as much talent as UofM. He acts like a two TD lead is insurmountable and calls plays like the game is over which consistently lets inferior teams back into games. Don't get me wrong, I'd love him as the coach of WCU. He'd be great in I-AA. But at a school like Michigan, where the resources *ahem* are spread *ahem* far and wide (and every starter's grandmother has a job at the local car dealership *ahem*) you gotta... as Larry the Cable Guy might say... "Git 'R Done" every year. Every. Year.

10 and 2 is fine. 7 and 5 is not. And Lloyd has wasted his National Championship capital and then some with too many 8-4 campaigns.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Heels cool down: "Lodrick Stewart and Nick Young each had 18 points to lead Southern California to a 74-59 victory over No. 17 North Carolina." North Carolina's freshmen "finally" showed up last night, and it was not pretty. 27 turnovers and complete panic when USC went up 10 with 5 min to play. USC is an FSU type team with gritty athletes who you can't let get any confidence. The Tar Heels let Lodrick Stewart get rolling and it was all over. USC is a bad team with some nice pieces. This won't be the last team we see this version of North Carolina this year...I promise you that!

Tigers add to trophy collection
: "Clemson wears down Akron to earn first significant tournament title in 25 seasons. " That term "signigicant tournament" does not speak well of the Tiger program. However, I think this was a smart move by the coach to get these guys in a tournament that they can win. Sometimes, winning games, any games, is all it takes to change the culture of a program. We shall see.

Duke wins after slow start: "The Blue Devils let St. John's hang around until late in the first half, then gradually pull away as freshman Josh McRoberts scores 10 of his 12 points after halftime."

ACC Football news from the Footblog:

Apparently, she's not applying enough preassure according to the NCAA graduation story from this very same paper yesterday. Keep up the good effort, but let's get those numbers up, too!!!

Seminoles still not getting much respect: "For Florida State players there is no getting used to people telling them they don't belong."

"It's a different feeling when you have guys on your team that want to sacrifice everything every day, and they're going to give it their all every day."
Wow....

How about a little NBA News: "Bobcats topple Bulls in Chicago - Felton-Knight guard duo pours in 41 points."

ACC Football news from the Footblog:

Paterno caps comeback, is voted top coach by AP.

Tigers give Grant boot before bowl: "Wide receiver from Camden denies breaking rules, says he will transfer; two others ineligible due to grades."

Asst. DA: Barrington Edwards blew 'sweet deal' on charges by not appearing in court: "North Carolina tailback Barrington Edwards had a "sweet deal" arranged for two speeding tickets, but after he failed to appear in court several times, the deal has been wiped off the table." You know.....John Bunting has the galling habit of losing football games AND recruiting idiots who are supposed to be "good kids." Just how long can a Carolina fan, who has given this guy his due when he has deserved it, take this nonsense. Barrington Edwards, you get the ACC Basketblog's Fred G. Sanford "You Big Dummy" Award!

GEORGIA TECH REPORT: Henderson emotional over graduation

Blue Devils get commitment from big defensive lineman: "Brandon Harper played only two seasons of high-school football in Alpharetta, Ga., but that was enough for him to become part of the future of the Duke program."

Everybody gets into the swing of things in Clemson rout of Tarzans: "Reserves help Tigers hit a school-record 16 treys vs. Div. II foe." OK....you don't get credit for beating a team named the "Tarzans." From this day forward, Clemson's record will be reflected -1 on the blog. Tigers remain 8-0!

Another hurdle cleared: "Boston College basketball player Sean Williams, suspended from the school and the team since his May 20 arrest on campus for marijuana possession and underage drinking, cleared another hurdle toward reinstatement when he appeared in Brighton District Court yesterday and was granted permission to return to campus, effective today." If this kid actually makes it back, look out! BC will be a very different team than what we saw against Maryland and Michigan State.

The Daily Roundup: Monday

The BEST ACC Basketball Coverage!!!

Because we care, Jim Cramer's MAD MONEY and RADIO Recap.

The Headlines:

Pack shows off new look: State begins ACC play by reversing outcome of last year's opener.

Caulton Tudor: Pack makes scoring team effort, looks to improve on last years 7-9 league record. I had NCSU beating UConn in the NCAA's last year, but don't like the fact that teams make the Dance with losing conference records. The Mid Majors bring a great flavor to the tournament. I believe too many of those good teams get left out for the likes of sub .500 major conference programs. I understand competition, but you also have to recognize achievement on all levels. Neither a 7th place ACC school nor a 2nd place Big Sky team is going to win the NCAA. Why not reward the spot to the school that has performed best amongst their peers instead of to the team who just happens to have a below average house in a great neighborhood? Don't agree? Take it to the comments section!

No rust for the Devils as Duke cruises by Valpo: "After a week-long break from basketball for exams and papers, top-ranked Duke's offense put on a textbook performance Duke's defense, however, hadn't quite turned the page."

Noel's defense helps Tar Heels bust Broncos: "Spurred on by a boisterous Smith Center crowd, senior David Noel makes life miserable for Santa Clara standout Travis Niesen in the second half as UNC avenges last year's stunning loss."

Rebounding still worries Heels: "Tyler Hansbrough is going to be smaller than his opponent in almost every game this season. But North Carolina's freshman post player could go a long time before he gives up as much size as he did Saturday night against Santa Clara. The 6-9, 235-pound Hansbrough found himself matched up against Broncos freshman John Bryant, a 6-11 center listed at 329 pounds."

Despite Singletary, Cavs can't prevail over 'Zags: "U.Va.'s point guard scores career-best 35, but Gonzaga rallies for victory."

Up all night, Hokies hit jackpot in Vegas: "A late start and an unfamiliar environment can't stop Virginia Tech, which puts aside a first-half malaise to edge Stanford, 59-52, and claim its third straight victory."

Hokies go to break on high note: "Tech's comeback victory over Stanford is another boost for a team excited about its play up to now."

Eagles get going, then soar: "Nonconference basketball games against relatively unknown opponents can be a bit of a shot in the dark. And with Boston College coming out of exams, that only seemed to heighten coach Al Skinner's anxiety about his team's home date yesterday against Texas Southern of the Southwestern Athletic Conference."

Skinner awaits word on Williams: "Sean Williams, the suspended Boston College basketball player, could take the first step toward gaining his reinstatement to the school and the team this morning with his appearance in Brighton District Court, BC coach Al Skinner said."

FSU holds off Bowling Green's 3-point barrage.

Tigers seek sun and fun with a title: Trip to Puerto Rico offers Clemson a respite from worries but not from work

Sendek takes offense at Wolfpack's label: "N.C. State coach tires of his team's system being called a 'Princeton offense'." Hey Herb, you want us to start calling it something else? Then you, as a coach and a program, have to start making the impact on college basketball that Princeton and their legendary coach did. Do something innovative.....like win some more games. You win enough games and people will call you offense anything you like. Until then, sit in the fourth row and keep your trap shut.

Karl embraces idea of minors: "The theory George Karl doesn't like rookies has taken a bit of a hit. He's actually giving meaningful minutes this season to forward Linas Kleiza, who barely squeezed into the first round of the draft." However, Jules from Harlem, on his way to ......the D league!!! You NC State folks just can't catch a break, can you. McCants should be right behind him. Seriously.

Dascenzo: Wolfpack balanced, dangerous. "Nine games and eight wins into the season, N.C. State has a few good men to rely on, that's for sure."

Dascenzo: Boos, UNC defense swarm Broncos.

For Tar Heels, Wes is more: "Saint Louis guard Tommie Liddell had just blocked a North Carolina 3-point attempt when Wes Miller sprinted out of nowhere, chased the loose ball down the court, and smacked it off Liddell as they tumbled out of bounds -- giving the Tar Heels the ball."

NCAA chief lauds new way to assess schools: Transfers won't hurt graduation rates. It's about time.....

Spending a concern to NCAA: "President Myles Brand says Division I schools need to cut costs to a more reasonable level."

News from the NBA Front: RICK BONNELL - Bobcats show little fighting spirit; Scrappiness that defined debut season is missing.

ACC Football News from the Footblog:

ACC learns hard bowl lessons.

Virginia Tech athletics department financials.

Virginia athletics department financials.

For Penn State, Maryland delivers: "Terps slowed in race for in-state recruits as success of Williams puts stamp on market."

Wimbley wants another shot: "Kamerion Wimbley has been a patient spectator. Although it bothered him plenty to not play against Florida and Virginia Tech, the Florida State defensive end didn't want to re-injure his sprained knee."

Florida Backup Quarterback Portis Is Transferring to Maryland.

Seminoles mull over 2006 NFL Draft options.

Randy King: Vick will be back at Virginia Tech, mark it down.

Coaches' big raises at Va. Tech, U.Va. funded by success.

Imoh to miss Gator Bowl

Decision out of his hands: "Miami fans await the decision of Devin Hester, who might leave a year early, but the exciting all-around talent will `leave it up to God's hands.'" Those, and the hands of his academic advisors.....

Gabriel on track with Pack: "Roman Gabriel is fondly remembered by N.C. State fans as a great quarterback with a majestic football name, a player of another era whose jersey, No. 18, was the first retired by the school. But there are a few things Wolfpackers, especially the younger ones, may not know....."

Recruits flock to The "U" on important weekend.

SCOTT FOWLER on the DIVISION 1-AA NATIONAL CHAMPIONS: "ASU fans can toot their horns; Even band played role in title win that echoed through the mountains." Great game, great fans, and great defensive ends.

The Daily Roundup: Friday

The BEST ACC Basketball Coverage!!!

Because we care, Jim Cramer's MAD MONEY and RADIO Recap.

The Headlines:

Just in case you haven't noticed (and I hadn't either until about 5 minutes ago), Clemson has started the season with an 8-0 record.

Dascenzo: Undefeated can be less than perfect: "Already the persistent talk of whether Duke can win every basketball game this season has reached such staggering heights that a day cannot go by when someone on some radio station doesn't ask the inevitable."

Unlucky #13 for BC Hoops

A little news from the SEC front - Randolph gets a reprieve, Center can rejoin Cats this season.

Still maintaining innocence, sprinter says he's through:"Disgraced sprinter Tim Montgomery says he's done. The former 100-meter world record holder has retired, rather than waiting out a two-year suspension and returning under a cloud of suspicion." Horrible....they couldn't get his ex-wife Marion Jones b/c of her celebrity, so they go after him with no credible proof. Terrible that those folks can get away with this type of witch hunt.

ACC Football news from the Footblog:

Div I-AA Playoff Central - Common ground: Appalachian State QBs Williams, Elder friends in title pursuit
The friendship was forged between the quarterbacks in the spring of 2003, when the mountains surrounding Boone were becoming lush and green, not white and barren as they are now, early in what promises to be a cold, long winter.

N. Iowa used to playing from behind

Title shot more than that for Mountaineers: "To say this is more than a football game -- that it's a chance to erase old pains and help uplift an entire community -- might sound like hyperbole."

Feel-good story, despite injury, money issues: "It's rare that an athletics director is happy to lose thousands of dollars on a football game. Appalachian State's Charlie Cobb is."

Facts about Appalachian football

Team records: ASU vs. N. Iowa

Key matchups: ASU vs. N. Iowa

Pack RB eyes schools: "Amato won't allow move to Florida." Why on earth is he blocking that kid from playing for Florida? I completely understand Miami and FSU, but Florida? Check out what his dad has to say
"He told my wife that Bobby would get a lot of playing time this year, and he didn't get diddly," Mortimer said of Amato. "I don't know. Evidently, you have to be a running back from North Carolina to run in that backfield."
Who would have 'thunk' that some little 'ol country NC boys could lay the smack down for PT on the big time running back from the state of Florida? Stop acting like a little 'ol bi$!@, pop!

ACC to change bowl-selection process

Clemson hopes for better result in return to Orlando: "Tigers' coaches and players will try to erase memories of a 55-15 loss to Texas Tech in 2002 in then-Tangerine Bowl."

Jennings injures ankle: "The University of Miami football players returned to practice Thursday after an 18-day layoff, happy to be back for an hour session in shorts, jerseys and shoulder pads."

One On One With Duke's Mike Brown

Cosh comes to Terps' defense: "K-State aide returns to UM as coordinator."

Doug Doughty, UVa Insider: What's with the UVa fans?

Don't skip this story - Maryland high school suffers tragic loss in the Iraq war

Hokies on hot list:"Virginia Tech standouts Marcus Vick and Darryl Tapp top this year's all-state football teams. See the full list "

Cavs' Best wins Piccolo award

Cards not believing the 'weak' Tech talk.

Bowl game no longer Peachy: "Chick-fil-A gets exclusive naming rights, will distribute highest non-BCS payout."

Ready for the challenge: - Speedy Clemson recruit prepared for state's best: "Bamberg-Ehrhardt defensive end Ricky Sapp and his fellow South Carolina linemen could get plenty of work Saturday at the 69th Shrine Bowl at Wofford's Gibbs Stadium."

Georgia Tech Gets a Big One in recruit Demaryius Thomas.

Random Thoughts

1) Duke will be #1 when I release the updated BasketBlog Top 20 list.

2) Donovan McNabb really pisses people off. First it was Rush Limbaugh. Then it was Terrell Owens. And most recently it's J. Whyatt Mondesire, head of the Philadelphia chapter of the NAACP. Now despite Slate.com's assertion that McNabb is not really that good a quarterback I can tell you that he's carried my fantasy team for several years (except for the season-ending injury this year). And he's quite good as a QB, notwithstanding his lack of a SuperBowl title*.

In response to Mondesire's line that "You scammed us man and there's no way any longer to refrain from "keepin' it real"" I would like to counter that Mondesire should see Chappelle's work on "When keepin' it real goes wrong." 'Cause this whole is incredibly wrong. I'll keep most of what I think about Mondesire's comments and their larger societal importance to myself. But I have to say they reflect a level of ignorance most people are kind enough to whisper behind closed doors instead of publishing in the newspaper they own.

*Nobody argues Payton Manning isn't a good QB just because he doesn't have a title, btw.

3) So far so good on the rehab. I'll be back to dunking in no time. :)
