901 Posts

That's how many we've put on this blog in the last 400 days or so.

Back to the draft:

Can you guys believe Mario Williams went ahead of Reggie Bush? I can tell you I've got the third and fourth picks in my fantasy league and I won't be able to sniff the New Orleans Saints' new RB.

And Matt Leinart all the way to the Cardinals at #10? Wasn't it me who was saying the Cards have a pretty good offense with great WRs? And didn't I say something about how the Cards aren't the worst team in football these days? Self-promotion may be the mating call of the mute button on ATH but on the BasketBlog it's a way of life!

Mel Kiper, Jr.

Great story about college dropout Mel Kiper, Jr, draft expert.

I don't know if I'm going full-BEVOR this weekend and watching every single hour of the coverage but I just might TiVo the thing and watch a condensed version.

(h/t BEVOR)

Thanks to Stormy for pointing out the investigations of other ACC lax teams. What a complete and total crock o' dung it is to insinuate this sort of guilt by association. I know journalists can't resist the urge to operate like a herd but this is gar-bage!

More coverage of the continuing saga that is NCSUs search for a men's head basketball coach. (Thanks to ball.)

Today's Roundup

Ed is busy with a thing in another city and doesn't have the internet access he needs.

Birkel's busy grading papers and writing a final (or two).

So today, dear readers, we depend on you to find the stories that interest you and bring them to our attention. Just provide a link to whatever you like in the comments and we'll put it up on the main page.

And maybe I'll be back to make it happen when I get truly bored with grading.

From TVP: Lee Fowler has been rejected... again. No from Beilein. No from Lavin. And from the last sentence: "Sendek went 8-38 against those rivals, and was 9-16 against Wake Forest, the state's other ACC school." Ouch.

Stormy sends best wishes to Virginia Tech AD Jim Weaver. The BasketBlog hopes Mr. Weaver continues to show no signs of his Parkinson's -- for a very long time.

Doug notes some interesting goings-on with a former GT guard.

Stormy also notes it took UVa longer to find Coach Leitao than it's taken NCSU -- so far -- to find a coach. But do they need to make a "big splash"?

BEVOR, thanks for the McRoberts news. I'll sleep better knowing he's back for one more year at Duke.

The Daily Roundup: Wednesday

The BEST ACC Sports Coverage!!!

Because we care:

Jim Cramer's MAD MONEY and RADIO recap

Duke player has D.C. strife: "An assault charge against Duke lacrosse player Collin Finnerty in Washington D.C. has been reactivated after a rape charge is filed in Durham."

Duke students at party may lose prosecution deals: "By allegedly attending a party at which an exotic dancer claimed she was raped by three Duke University lacrosse players, some Duke students may have lost a coveted chance to escape prosecution for minor offenses like alcohol violations, public urination and making too much noise."

Foes try DA on rape case: "In possibly their last public forum before next week's Democratic primary, Durham's three district attorney candidates traded verbal barbs and answered questions Tuesday about everything from the Duke University lacrosse rape case to the frequency of plea bargains."

Black will be back on track at Talladega: "Dale Jr. will pay tribute to his father."

Intimidating honor: "Earnhardt Jr. celebrates his father's legacy. The one thing a NASCAR driver never wanted to see was the black No. 3 Chevrolet closing on his rear bumper."

Fox crafting a strategy: "The game will be the same: No. 1 vs. No. 2 in the Bowl Championship Series rankings."

The Headlines:

Eyes on State Day 25

Dascenzo: Pack's search for coach continues: "By now you've likely heard what ESPN college basketball analyst, and former Duke player, Jay Bilas had to say about N.C. State's search for a new head coach."

Andrew Jones of the Wilmington Star: Wolfpack coaching search beset by questions, delays: '
"From the outside, it looked like business as usual on Tuesday at the Dail Basketball Complex on N.C. State’s campus. Inside, however, was a different story."

Lavin, Beilein seem to be focus: "No one is saying anything as State's search for basketball coach continues." The choice of Beilein would be a classic move by the AD Fowler. Your fans push one coach out b/c of his style of play and you hire another who plays nearly the same game (albeit, Beilein is a bit better at it, in my opinion).

ACC Football News from the Footblog:

Round 1 could be big one for ACC

Williams likely to go very high: "Experts say State's star defensive end will be one of first three or four players takenLook out, NFL. There's another Julius Peppers-type player on the way. At least that is what the scouts are saying when it comes to N.C. State's Mario Williams."

Carolina's Chase Page says his numbers don't show his game

Duke's Phillip Alexander: Broken leg is totally healed, expects to be in NFL team camp

Two Terps Work to Overcome Long Layoffs

UVa. Notes from the Times Dispatch

NFL Draft Hill proves bigger checks often come to those who wait: "Justin Miller. Donnell Washington. Derrick Hamilton. What do these three former Clemson Tigers have in common? All three skipped their senior seasons for a shot at the NFL. Were they right to do so? Clemson coach Tommy Bowden never has been one to begrudge a player’s decision to turn pro, especially if it helps his family’s bottom line. But he thought all three were making a mistake from a developmental standpoint and ultimately a financial one, too."

Receiver chooses Wolfpack: "Steven Howard, a wide receiver at Charlotte Olympic, became N.C. State's third football commitment of the year Tuesday afternoon."

Prized recruit gives nod to U.Va.: "6-5, 230-pound QB at West Springfield had Cavs at top of list."

The BEST ACC Sports Coverage!!!

Because we care:

Jim Cramer's MAD MONEY and RADIO recap

Lacrosse players face old charges: "The Durham district attorney says he will reinstate misdemeanors charges in some cases." Well, well, well....it seems that our boys from Durham weren't quite as clean cut as their attorneys would have the public believe. Digging up criminal misdemeanor records cuts both ways, defense attorneys. Boy......this is going to turn incredibly nasty. Not good for anybody.....

Defense asks for dancer's history: "An exotic dancer who says three Duke University lacrosse players raped her apparently has more than one version of her story, has suffered from mental and emotional problems, and may have been committed at least once to a hospital or drug treatment program, a defense lawyer said in court motions documents filed Monday."

Former Wolfpack player Cartier dies: "Warren Cartier, who teamed with Dick Dickey and Sammy Ranzino on coach Everett Case's first four basketball teams at N.C. State, died Sunday in Milwaukee, Wis. Cartier was 81."

Bush No. 1 No Matter What 'Experts' Say: "A week ago, there were rumors out of Houston that had the Texans leaning away from taking Reggie Bush with the No. 1 pick and toward Mario Williams, the North Carolina State defensive end who is supposed to be a cross between Julius Peppers and Lawrence Taylor. "

Added BCS game may add to confusion: "It's peaceful out here in the Valley of the Sun. Moderate temperatures (80 degrees), low humidity, not a controversy in sight."

Video Clemson's WestZone project

Son's NFL money to help mom in Liberia: "Penn State's Hali hopes to be high draft pick, get mother to United States."

The Headlines:

Eyes on State -- Day 24: Amid several Internet reports that contract discussions are under way with former UCLA coach Steve Lavin and West Virginia's John Beilein, neither returned telephone calls on Monday.

SMU hires Doherty: "Mustangs get ex-UNC coach." Well State fans, there went your best chance to win right away erase the mystique the Blues have over your fans and players. I think Matty D might regret that move......or........., he could pull more of his recruiting magic and knock off Barnes a few times. Make one run in the NCAA tourney and that will launch him back into a major conference.

Doherty will try to turn SMU program around: "Mustangs have not made NCAA field for 13 seasons."

ACC Football News from the Footblog:

A Weight-and-See Attitude: "Virginia All-American D'Brickashaw Ferguson, he of the seven-foot wingspan and name right out of "The Thorn Birds", is the most refined offensive lineman in the upcoming NFL Draft."

U.VA. NOTES from the Times Dispatch

Drawing notice: "Virginia's Brad Butler played most of the 2005 season injured."

Contrite, UVa's Pinigis to face charge

Dascenzo: Pack's Williams a great pick: "It's the shadow some have talked about, a large one on a ridiculously humid afternoon, that showed up on the practice field one day last summer at N.C. State. "

Draft looking good to Jost: "Jon Jost had a sense that this NFL Draft would be something special for Florida State football players when the first scouts entered his office in the fall. And with each conversation between himself and NFL teams, the excitement has built."

FSU draft projections: "No Florida State staff member has more contact with NFL scouts and coaches than strength and conditioning coach Jon Jost."

'Canes hoping for first-round flurry: "The NFL hasn't exactly gone from feast to famine when it comes to drafting Miami Hurricanes."

Ralph anxiously awaits NFL Draft day: "Former guard for Tar Heels likely to go in later rounds."

Bennett strong in Tech's spring finale: "Part of Taylor Bennett's role as Georgia Tech's backup quarterback is to pressure starter Reggie Ball to improve."

Ex-Duke QB Schneider picks Youngstown St.: "Former Duke quarterback Mike Schneider will close out his college career close to home, deciding to spend his final year of eligibility at Division I-AA school Youngstown State."

Jim Cramer's MAD MONEY and RADIO recap.

Dooley listed as critical: "Former North Carolina football coach Bill Dooley remained in critical but stable condition at Duke University Hospital on Friday. Early Tuesday morning, Dooley had an emergency endovascular repair of a leaking iliac artery aneurysm. An aneurysm is an expanded and thinned area of an artery. The iliac arteries branch off from the aorta and supply blood to the legs. "

Questions persist about house used by the family of Reggie Bush. This could be trouble for USC.

BCS looking at minor fine tuning: "Becoming eligible for the Bowl Championship Series might be easier this season. "

Duke scandal tarnishes Durham

Duke lacrosse faces uncertain future

The Headlines:

Is Steve Lavin really the guy NC State is going to hire? Caulton Tudor says whomever it is, the Hire will reflect on Fowler. You State folks can't be happy with this development. He's a little younger, a little better looking, a little cooler.........with a record of under achievement during the regular season, and "pull your rump out of the fire finishes" in the Dance. If you're looking for consistent, 22 plus win seasons and a program on par with the Blues, I don't think Lavin's your guy. Don't agree? Take it to the comments section.

Day 23: News of the Day: The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported Sunday that Pitt assistant Patrick Sandle could leave Jamie Dixon's staff to join Steve Lavin's staff at N.C. State, should Lavin get the job. Sandle was on the UCLA staff under Lavin from 2001-03

Doherty to become coach at SMU: I don't like that move for him. Besides the fact that SMU is a sports wasteland, I think he could have at least feigned a little loyalty to the folks at FIU for pulling him out of the fire and giving him a chance. Oh well....so much for my hopes of having NC State's best chance for immediate success back in the Triangle.

Gamebreaker a special case: "University of Miami football coach Larry Coker calls Devin Hester ``a mystery.'' His agent calls him intriguing. His basketball-playing fiancée calls him a bit skittish about a thrilling event in his life next Saturday."

Busy draft is likely for UM: "For four consecutive years, the NFL Draft feasted on the Miami Hurricanes. Then came 2005, when the football Canes had their least productive showing in five seasons -- five players chosen, including eighth overall pick Antrel Rolle."

Crane shows the way: "Given his efficient performance in the annual Jay McGillis Memorial Spring Game yesterday at Alumni Stadium, Chris Crane might have given Boston College coach Tom O'Brien reason to reconsider his old practice of giving the backup quarterback a second-quarter cameo."

Weekend Stuff

I found this article (via PowerLine) about baseball quite interesting. It's science-y and I like that!
Your Little League coach probably didn't know it, but every time he sent you to the plate with the instructions "keep your eye on the ball," he was giving you an impossible task.(snip)
At the Major League level, pitchers sling fastballs between 90 and 100 mph and sometimes a tweak faster. The ball moves far too swiftly for a batter to watch for its entire journey to home plate.
"In the last few feet before the plate, the ball reaches an angular velocity that exceeds the ability of the eye to track the ball," Fuld told LiveScience. "The best hitters can track the ball to within 5 or 6 feet of the plate."
That's pretty cool. Read the rest.

And here's something interesting about the Duke rape case from Tom Maguire. He points to some problems with the timeline presented by the NY Times.

You also might want to read this from Maguire about the line-up procedure used by DA Nifong.

If you're interested, I think Maguire's posts will definitely inform readers. I know that even though I've been tracking this story these details were not on my radar screen.

The BEST ACC Sports Coverage!!!

Because we care:

Lacrosse players' alibis not 'foolproof': "They contend they have alibis, and SBI tests show their DNA didn't match any found on an exotic dancer. But two Duke lacrosse players may have an uphill battle against allegations that they raped the woman last month at an off-campus party. "

Brodhead says it's time for healing: "Besides transfixing the nation, the Duke lacrosse case has illuminated pre-existing campus and community concerns that must not be allowed to fade without being addressed, Duke President Richard Brodhead said Thursday night."

2nd Duke party dancer now questions doubts about accuser

Amid scandal, Duke panels seek better days: "Investigations are under way by several groups named April 5 by Duke President Richard Brodhead to deal with issues that surfaced in a rape investigation involving the lacrosse team."

Cab driver tells of fares

Accuser and her family value support: "The mother of the accuser in the Duke lacrosse case said Thursday that it has been a rough few days for the family since defense lawyers began publicly contesting the allegations."

Arrest may put D.C. pact at risk: "Collin Finnerty, one of two Duke University lacrosse players arrested on rape charges this week, is set Tuesday to be in a Washington courtroom, where a deal that allowed him to avoid trial on an earlier assault charge could be revoked. Finnerty, 19."

Time for Iverson to end the embarrassment

Jim Cramer's MAD MONEY and RADIO recap

The Headlines:

Eyes on State -- Day 20: "Another day brought more suspense and speculation. NCSU athletics director Lee Fowler was on campus Thursday but not returning calls. Former UCLA coach Steve Lavin, now an ESPN analyst, remains a potential candidate."

Haith off the board; ’Pack contacts Lavin: "N.C. State’s search for a new basketball coach reached Day 20 on Thursday, and while a few issues became clearer, the process appears only slightly closer to a conclusion than at any time since Herb Sendek left for Arizona State."

Wolfpack's attention turns to Lavin as coach

What's it gonna take?: "The next N.C. State coach will have one overriding task when he arrives in Raleigh: Turn the Wolfpack into a regular national contender. The process begins and ends with one thing -- players."

Caner-Medley, Garrison leave UM: "Seniors withdraw to pursue pro career."
Williams pointed out that the team met the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate cut score of 925, but said "hopefully they'll return to get their degrees like assistant coach Keith Booth, Laron Profit, Terrell Stokes, among others."
Williams Says He's Surprised, But Supportive of Strawberry and Ibekwe
Even though neither player has a realistic chance to be selected in the two-round draft, Williams said he expects both to file the requisite paperwork to declare before the April 29 deadline for non-seniors."I would think so, because they have the blessing of their parents," Williams said. "As their coach, I can tell them how I feel. When it is a family decision, I can be a source of information, but I can't overrule the family. If that's what they want to do, they have my blessing."Both are expected to pull out of the draft before the June 18 deadline and return to school, but certain individuals close to the players believe they have a chance to be first-round picks.
Interesting......take it to the comments section!!!

Not ACC, but a good read on a great coach- Bob Lipper presents, STAYING POWER: "Happy with Virginia Union University success, Robbins not moved to move."

Fredrick leaving Jackets: "Part-time starting point guard will transfer after two seasons." Looks like Daddy finally got to him. Got luck, Zam.

FALL GUY-U.Va. do-it-all, once projected to go in 3rd round, might go undrafted: "That D'Brickashaw Ferguson will be snapped up early in the NFL draft is a virtual certainty. ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr. isn't so sure what awaits another former University of Virginia star next weekend."

Bill Dooley recovering after surgery: "Former North Carolina football coach Bill Dooley has been admitted to Duke University Hospital after having an aortic aneurysm Monday, close friend Charlie Adams said Thursday night."

UM's McCray mobile after left knee surgery: "University of Miami defensive tackle Teraz McCray underwent minor arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Wednesday."

Jim Cramer's MAD MONEY and RADIO recap

New tension cloaks team: "With the threat of a third indictment in the gang rape investigation of the Duke University lacrosse team, those who know the players who haven't been charged feel a corrosive worry that one of their own could still face formal accusations."

And you thought there was only one round of DNA - Lacrosse players, lawyers await results of second round of DNA testing. Perhaps Nifong is not the nit the defense teams are trying to make him out to be.

AD says Duke will endure turmoil

Bart Wright of the Greenville News: Spurrier offers dose of reality to USC fans . Dang it, I still wish North Carolina had that guy. Make me eat my words, John Bunting....please!!!

The Headlines:

NEWS FLASH: Ibekwe, Strawberry to Test NBA Waters - That is just about the damned dumbest thing I've heard this week. Neither of them, even in this weak draft, is a second round pick!!! Sorry guys, even without hiring an agent this just makes you look very, very immature and foolish. Gary has got some problems in College Park.

Eyes on State -- Day 19: Steve Lavin's name continues to be bandied about, but the former UCLA coach has been elusive. What say you, NC State fans. Is Lavin good enough for you? You'll be sorry you didn't hire Matty D! Take it to the comments section.

Andrew Jones of the Wilmington Star: State's Clock Is Ticking

Caulton Tudor of the Raleigh News and Observer - Large question for Duke: "Duke's next basketball season hinges on freshman forward Josh McRoberts, who has not announced whether he'll enter the NBA Draft or return to play for the Blue Devils." I say gone. By the way.....Duke's season does not hinge on the return of Josh McRoberts. I think they return 4 or 5 McDonald's All American's without him. They return a more than competent point guard (Wake Forest would have won 20 games this year with Paulus running the show), Nelson, Boykin, and a top 5 recruiting class. Sounds a little like this years version of North Carolina. Whatever Josh decides, Duke won't win the ACC next season but will finish among the top 4 teams.

ACC Football News from the Footblog:

Milton Kent of the Baltimore Sun: Practicality loses with decision on disabled girl. How do the basketbloggers feel about this. I'm inclined to call the guy an idiot, but I tend to be very liberal in these type circumstances. Take it to the comments section!!!

Activists, leaders welcome Duke arrests: "Community leaders and NAACP activists welcomed the news that Durham police early Tuesday had arrested and charged two Duke University lacrosse players in connection with an alleged gang rape, saying the move finally would allow the legal process to move forward."

Duke rape suspects raised in affluence and academics

Finnerty's exclusive neighborhood in shock. I didn't even read this and, let me guess: The neighbors report that he's a great young man, they can't believe all of these lies, and that they would trust him with any of their kids. That's great. Just make sure you add that in his spare time, he apparently acts like a homophobe and assaults people (see plea agreement in DC stemming from an attack last year). Can you really trust the credibility of a person who is already up on charges involving a physical assault on an innocent man and now accused in another assault? Goose.....gander?

Having said that.....I'm kind of sick of the media harping about the wealth of these guys....really painting them into a corner. I don't know how relevant it is to there guilt or innocence but really just serves to heighten emotions in an already highly heated debate. We'll do our best to stay away from these type stories going forward.

Duke lacrosse players refused police interviews: "Police tried to interview Duke University lacrosse players at their dorm rooms about the team party where a woman reported being raped, but the athletes refused to speak with investigators, an attorney for several players said yesterday"

Gregory Kane of the Baltimore Sun: Race, image front and center in Duke story

Grand jury could hear Duke case: "Some lawyers connected to the investigation of a reported rape at a Duke lacrosse team party expect the case to go before the grand jury that meets today in the Durham courthouse."

All's quiet on Wolfpack front for now

For coach, see plane: "Wonder where N.C. State Athletics Director Lee Fowler is headed next in his search for a men's basketball coach? If he's on a plane, you might be able to find out." That's nuts.....

N.C. State will remain patient with search: "After being turned down by Texas’ Rick Barnes and Memphis’ John Calipari, N.C. State officials have opted for the more silent route in their ongoing quest to find a new basketball coach."

Calipari Couldn't Change His Stripes: "Applause goes out to Lee Fowler and the search committee for having the fortitude to go after a coach (John Calipari) they wanted, especially one with a questionable reputation."

Daily Roundup -- Birkel Style

Ed has asked me to cover for him; I apologize in advance for not meeting his high standards. Realistically, I'm just hoping for fewer spelling errors. Zing!

Clemson baseball survived its trip to Cullowhee where they beat the Catamounts 8-3. Tough loss for Cat fans who turned out in big numbers and were met by scores of Clemson faithful.

Wake Forest finished last in the ACC but has a recruititing class of six players capped by the addition of Casey Crawford. 21, 10 and 5 blocks as a senior in HS. Maybe Skip can recover if he's got some diamonds in the rough. We'll know early next season, especially if they struggle against a team like WS-State in the preseason.

BC Coach starts his own coaching tree. Prediction: a lot of branches. (Reg. Req'd)

JJ Redick is the first basketball player to receive the Sullivan Award since Big Red, Bill Walton. Hopefully that doesn't mean I'll have to listen to JJ drone on and on about The Grateful Dead during future broadcasts. Or attempts to talk in prose. Or poetry. I'm feeling sick just contemplating it.

The lacrosse story you've been missing: Maryland is ranked #4 but lost to Navy the other night. No charges were filed.

In other lacrosse news, Duke recruits have been released from their letters of intent and are searching for new places to play a sport.
Whether Duke will field a lacrosse team for the 2006-07 school year is unclear...

The reports are due May 1, and a decision is expected shortly afterward about whether Duke will disband the team or resume play with a new coach next season.
Great! Let's make sure young people who have made college plans have to reconsider their options because of an ongoing investigation into charges that have NOTHING whatsoever to do with them. Solid work, President Broadhead. Solid! Nothing says you're a great place to learn quite so much as telling high school seniors one month before graduation to go someplace else.

Greg Biffle's girlfriend will be reprimanded by NASCAR and the WaPo uses a stock photo of Greg Biffle in their story?!? Come on guys! Show us the girlfriend for goodness sake!

The BasketBlog will go where the WaPo won't. Here are NASCAR wives and girlfriends.

Golf beat NASCAR in the TV ratings but were down 13% without Tiger in the hunt. Sorry Phil. You're never going to be as big as Tiger no matter the victories and world rankings.

LeBron James gets hurt and the Knicks suffer for it. Man, those Knickerbockers just can't catch a break. If they can keep losing they'll improve their draft position and maybe improve their sorry franchise. Whoops! Nevermind. They already traded their #1 draft pick. Hopefully LBJ will be 100% for the playoffs.

Clemmons, NC native and fireballer Mendy McKenzie helped move WCU into first place in the Southern Conference after sweeping Elon 8-0 and 6-2 in Cullowhee. Predicted to finish last in the conference owing to the fact this is Western's first season of intercollegiate play the Catamounts are exceeding expectations. As. I. Predicted. After building a million dollar softball facility I am sure this team will continue to feast on opponents in Cullowhee where they are 14-3 on the season.

The Daily Roundup: Wednesday

The BEST ACC Sports Coverage!!!

Because we care:

Jim Cramer's MAD MONEY and RADIO recap.

Nifong cites attacker ID, says more tests pending in lacrosse case: "Durham prosecutor Mike Nifong, says a woman who reported being raped at a Duke lacrosse team party has identified an assailant. Players' attorneys are skeptical of the development.

DNA doesn't offer magic key to case

Rick Maese of the Baltimore Sun: Resolution in Durham still seems far away

Convicted booster found slain: "Logan Young faced jail term for payoff to send top recruit to Alabama." They needed dental records to id him.....wow.

Sooners tap Capel as coach: "Ex-Duke standout succeeds Sampson."

The Headliness:

Calipari won't join Pack- N.C. State courtship apparently fails; source says coach will get a raise at Memphis: "John Calipari apparently will accept a raise and stay at Memphis instead of accepting an offer to coach basketball at N.C. State, a source close to the Memphis athletics program said Tuesday." All of the first choice, top notch, name coaches have now said "no" formally or informally. At what point do we start pointing the finger at the Wolfpack fan base for creating a situation around Herb that may be off putting to top coaches? Lee, you've got to make a big sack move. There are no more big name hires to make this transition an easy win. Go find the best young coach you can (Winthrop's coach?), or.......bring in Knight. Keep him for five years, get the national attention you want and the program needs and set that thing up for a big splash in 2012. Or, there is always the choice that would strike terror in the hearts of many, many Tar Heel fans.......Matty D! You think he can't recruit to NC State?!?!?!???!?!?!? You think he doesn't have the fire, drive, and NEED to make amends. That is a hire I WOULD NOT want to see happen. In five years, UNC v. NCSU would rise nationally to a must see game (can you imagine what ESPN would do to that story line!?!?!?!) ESPN would have two premiere, prime time basketball showcases: The Battle of the Blues, and The Family Feud. Matty D = big sack hire!

Calipari spurns State: "The new N.C. State men's basketball coach will not be John Calipari. He took a whirlwind visit to Raleigh on Monday night, and those associated with the Wolfpack program were optimistic they would receive a quick reply from him on Tuesday. NCSU offered Calipari a package worth about $2 million a year."

$2M question: Where does cash come from?: "If N.C. State offers $2 million to a new men's basketball coach, it will have to put together a deal that includes funds from the athletics department plus radio/television money, shoe contract dollars and fundraising from the booster club. "

Dascenzo: Seventh heaven for Pack?: "The N.C. State coaching search gets more interesting by the day. By Tuesday night, reports indicated that John Calipari would remain at Memphis despite reported meetings with Wolfpack officials."

Hats off to Fowler: "Here's to you, Lee Fowler. You were willing to stand by men's basketball coach Herb Sendek while fans ragged him as he was doing his job -- taking a team from dead last in the ACC to five straight NCAA Tournaments. You also received heat from the same fans, and unnecessary heat at that."

More bad news for NCSU - Simmons to test draft: "N.C. State basketball standout has not signed with agent."

Even MORE bad news for NCSU - Hodge's attire at issue: "Nugget 'dressed like gang member'."
"He had a bandanna over his head, and maybe they thought he was in a gang," Paladium club manager Jose Ramirez told the Rocky Mountain News in Tuesday's editions.
Hodge had gone to the club to talk to a friend, hip-hop artist Juelz Santana, who was performing there, Adams County (Colo.) investigators said. Ramirez said someone in the club's parking lot had flashed a gang sign at Hodge. It wasn't immediately clear whether Ramirez witnessed the incident.
Interesting..........

Duke awaits final recruit: "It's becoming more and more rare for college basketball programs to pick up top-notch recruits in the late signing period that begins today, but the Duke Blue Devils may be able to do just that." Apparently, Florida is now in the mix for this kid as well. Let's see: Duke, Florida, or Rutgers. Seems pretty easy to me if I'm a kid from New Jersey. I stay with the home town school and go to Duke (*I made a funny*)

Capel Not Just Another Coach K Protege: "Mike Krzyzewski has developed quite a few coaching proteges in college basketball. Jeff Capel thinks he might not fit the same mold as the rest of his Duke brethren."

Capel's departure leaves another hole: "VCU's next AD will face big decision earlyOK, Eugene P. Trani, president of Virginia Commonwealth University. The next move is yours."

Bob Lipper of the Richmond Times Dispatch - Oklahoma opportunity: Sooner, rather than later

Noel, Tar Heels face future challenges: "Most people's legs would have been shaking. At ease at the microphone in front of close friends and a few hundred strangers alike, David Noel didn't have that problem Tuesday night."

Is it me, or is the Winston-Salem Journal a little late with this - Staying: Hansbrough won't leave Heels.

Haith opts to stay: "University of Miami men's basketball coach Frank Haith was a top candidate for the coaching vacancy at Oklahoma, but elected Monday night to remain with the Hurricanes, UM athletic director Paul Dee said Tuesday." I didn't know that.......that's big news for Miami...a very big win for that program.

Haith receives five-year extension: "Two consecutive winning seasons and overtures from Oklahoma have gotten coach Frank Haith a contract extension that includes a raise for him and his staff."

Haith 'excited' about future: "Despite losing three key players, Hurricanes coach Frank Haith's expectations for next season's team remain extremely high."

Kansas prep standout coming to WFU

ACC Football News from the Footblog:

3 U.Va. athletes charged in incident: "Trio are arrested in connection with brawl, break-in at frat house."

Georgia Tech's Bell plucking the wild hairs: Tech kicker trying to straighten out erratic '05 season.

Miami speedster to visit Bears: "The Bears are expected to bring University of Miami receiver Sinorice Moss to Halas Hall for a pre-draft visit, continuing a relationship that started at January's Senior Bowl and continued at February's Indianapolis Scouting Combine."

FSU wants to run: "Former Florida State quarterback Gary Pajcic had just handed Warrick Dunn a check for his foundation at the 50-yard line, complete with the little handoff move the two might have enacted if they'd been Seminoles at the same time."

Adams is on track for Wake football: "Cary football running star Josh Adams said it was strange last fall to see his name bandied about on recruiting Web sites."

New Hanover TE commits to Wolfpack: "George Bryan, a 6-foot-6, 250-pound junior tight end at New Hanover, has announced that he will sign with the Wolfpack."

Georgia TECH

In case you guys weren't aware, Georgia Tech is more than just the name of a school that produces baseball, basketball and football players. They also produce some really cool techie stuff. And now, in partnership with NASCAR and the military they've produced a new vehicle.

It's pretty cool looking. But unfortunately I can't get the image to post on the BasketBlog so you'll have to click the link to see it. (Ed adds: "Don't worry Mr. Birkel, I'm always around to lend a helping hand. Your photo, good sir!!!")

DNA clears players, lawyers say; DA vows to continue Duke inquiry: "Defense lawyers said Monday that DNA tests prove Duke University lacrosse players did not rape a woman hired to strip at a team party, but the district attorney said he remains intent on building his case." The interesting thing is that the lack of DNA has absolutely nothing to do with whether a crime was committed involving broomsticks, condoms, and the like. See "How reliable is a DNA test? " I hope these attorneys don't think the public is going to take that bait. I think the DA is correct to pursue this a bit farther.

Duke students relieved by results; some NCCU students skeptical

Lizzie Rosen of Wake's Old Gold and Black Online: Athletes live in extremes: "We have always said that Dukies suck, and if you are on their lacrosse team right now, for you, life REALLY sucks."

The Headlines:

Calipari gets the job offer: "Memphis basketball coach John Calipari took several more steps toward taking on the same job at N.C. State on Monday, according to a source very close to N.C. State."

Calipari still on Pack's radar: "Memphis toils over salary in an effort to retain coach." Things are heating up in Raleigh.

Dascenzo: Calipari would be a good fit for Pack: "Assuming John Calipari still has a sense of humor and hasn't lost his Western Pennsylvania accent despite stopovers at Amhurst, Mass., East Rutherford, N.J., and Memphis, Tenn., the truth is this: The N.C. State and Memphis basketball programs are rather different."

Andrew Jones of the Wilmington Star - Search for N.C. State hoops coach lingers : "The next basketball coach at N.C. State won’t be Rick Barnes, and it might not be a high-profile coach currently watering the mouths of many Wolfpack fans."

Still no suspect in Hodge shooting: "Authorities said Monday they still had not identified any suspects in the weekend shooting of Denver Nuggets rookie guard Julius Hodge."

NC State's Collins aspires to play, coach: "Jordan Collins spent the past season as a student assistant with the basketball team and said he hopes to play overseas this upcoming year."

Boateng's Decision Not A Surprise

Two BC assistants expected to move on: "Boston College basketball coach Al Skinner will have at least one vacancy on his staff as of today, and could face another by the end of the week."

Why does Frank Haith's name keep coming up for college basketball openings?

Canes have men's basketball banquet: "After the basketball season ended, University of Miami 6-2 junior guard Guillermo Diaz dropped out of school to concentrate on preparation for the NBA Draft in June."

ACC Football News from the Footblog:

Ball should be having one - if he can relax: "Reggie Ball's final spring practice as Georgia Tech's quarterback ought to be a relaxing one."

Dateline NBC Watch

This from the Saturday Winston-Salem Journal:
Bruton Smith, theTexas Motor Speedway owner, said the FBI will be here paying attention this weekend to see if NBC follows last weekend's NASCAR sting operation at Martinsville, where the network brought in Muslims for the Nextel Cup race and followed them around with hidden cameras to judge racism in the stock-car racing crowd.
NBC has been one of NASCAR's television network partners since 2001, carrying the second half of the Nextel Cup season. But NBC's contract runs out at the end of this season and the network has declined to renew its NASCAR sponsorship, deciding instead to concentrate on NFLgames.
I haven't heard more about this ongoing story. But I did find that bit interesting.
