Bowden: Schnellenberger would have had most wins - "Bobby Bowden said that if Howard Schnellenberger had not left UM he would have passed Bowden as college football's winningest coach by now." That's mighty big of you, Coach.

From the good folks at the Duke Basketball Report: An update on former Devil, Antonio Lang.
We admire him greatly because he is perhaps the least affected athlete we have ever met. He made it a real point to include other people who weren't athletes, and was a genuinely nice guy in all respects. Nice to see that hasn't changed.
I would tend to agree with that. I met him several times as an undergraduate and was always impressed with him. Get over there!!

Giants tight end Shockey's latest statements candid -- but not shocking: "Four seasons in the NFL haven't changed former Hurricane and current Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey."

Shockey still a wild child : "Ladies and gentlemen, Jeremy Shockey. Hold your applause until the end. "

Too Funny

This one time, at cheerleading camp...

Cheerleaders. Drug bust. The mind boggles at the possibilities.

More Hooping Below the Fold!

Doping

The world's governing bodies are trying to rid sports of "performance enhancers" -- fair enough. I think it's a fool's errand and irrelevant.

And stupid.

Tom Maguire points out an effort, by some, to ban altitude tents that simulate sleeping at high altitudes. This causes the body, in response to a lack of oxygen, to produce more red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body, thus giving an athlete who uses one a competitive advantage.

That's ridiculous. What's next? Are we going to ban actually living at high altitudes? Are we going to ban working out because athletes whose bodies respond better to strength training have unfair advantages over those who don't?

Are we going to tie weights to people's legs? Put masks on pretty people to make them plainer? (Editor -- Does this explain all the Hollywood types donning fat suits? Birkel -- Maybe.)

Oh wait, that's already been done. Does anybody remember the name of the short story I'm referencing? If so, be a dear and leave the author's name or the title in the comments.

Thanks in advance.

Floyd Landis, whose remarkable march over the Alps in Stage 17 positioned him to win the Tour de France after his chances seemed bleak, tested positive after that stage for illegally high levels of testosterone during the race." Hope that's not true. Landis says that the damage is done and the stigma may never go away. I think that's right. Really too bad.

Plans being made for Dec. 25 game played in Africa: "N.C. Central or some other CIAA football team could find itself in Africa for Christmas if the sponsors of the proposed Motherland Classic get their wish." What an experience for those kids if that happens. Wow.

O'Neil to speak at Hall: " By Sunday, there will be 35 individuals affiliated with the black baseball era enshrined in the baseball Hall of Fame. Buck O'Neil, generally considered the foremost ambassador and a living history of that bygone period, will not be among them." ACC NOTES

Coaches fight fear of lost commitments:
National signing day for college football, the first day high school seniors can sign binding agreements with their school of choice, isn't until the first week of February. But for many colleges these days, recruiting classes are more than half full by the end of summer. That's certainly the case at Texas, where the Longhorns already have oral commitments from 22 players. And it's true in the ACC, where six of the league's 12 teams have at least 11 oral commitments for the class of 2007.

The Daily Roundup: Wednesday

The BEST ACC Sports Coverage!!!
PHOTO: JOHNNY CRAWFORD / AJC
"The Hurricanes came into the ACC with a powerhouse pedigree but have they faltered?"

Because we care:

Jim Cramer's MAD MONEY and RADIO recap

Danica Patrick decides against NASCAR:"Marketable driver will switch teams, not leagues."

USA Basketball Trims Roster to 15: "LeBron James already knew his name would be called when coach Mike Krzyzewski announced the U.S. national team's 15-man traveling roster Tuesday." The ACC representatives? Try Coach K, Paul, Jamison, Battier, Bosh and Brand. Not bad fellas, not bad at all. (God....could you imagine that five playing together in college with JJ supporting them from the stripe. Geeezzzzz.

The Conference Headlines:

Miami's big vice : "The Hurricanes have struggled in the ACC, and the bad news is piling up again this season."

ACC fails to live up to great expectations after expansion: "WHEN YOU THINK about ACC football, there is a term you can't avoid. The term, of course, is mid-major. What happened? After annexing Miami and Virginia Tech and then Boston College, the ACC looked potent. Look out, SEC. Well, maybe not SEC, but look out everybody else. I remember telling Carolina Panthers safety Mike Minter he was lucky his beloved Nebraska Cornhuskers didn't play in the ACC. I hope he doesn't remember." It's been a mixed bag so far, but I think mostly positive from a football standpoint. Folks need to relax...this conference is very, very strong.

But, according to the Macon Paper....Expanded ACC ranks among nation's best: "The Atlantic Coast Conference has improved competition, boosted television ratings and increased revenue since completing its two-year expansion from nine to 12 teams."

Swofford has raised prestige of ACC: "John Swofford never doubted that expansion of the Atlantic Coast Conference would result in more football dollars and greater national prestige overall for the league."

ACC debuts bowl lineup: "After top picks go, consortium will select from best available. Cooperation is the buzzword as the ACC tries to prevent a repeat of the embarrassing scenario that sent highly competitive Boston College to Boise, Idaho, for its bowl game last season.

Orange has top choice of ACC : "The winner of the ACC football title game will be guaranteed a spot in the Orange Bowl -- unless it is going to play for the national championship -- under a four-year agreement announced Tuesday."

ACC introduces new replay rules: "The Atlantic Coast Conference introduced a football instant replay system last season on a trial basis. On Tuesday, at the ACC Football Kickoff, the league introduced rules for the system to follow new NCAA guidelines."

New rules means fewer plays in ACC: "Rule and a new kickoff procedure that starts the clock when the ball is kicked rather than when it is received is expected to save around five minutes of game time."

Congrats on representing yourself well on the floor, JJ. Now remember, all of you Duke fans, this sets a precedent that the ACC will be held too going forward i.e. off the field troubles have nothing to do with awards for on field performance. I'm sure you will here about this going forward.

Love spurns UNC to play for UCLA: "North Carolina has only one scholarship for the 2007 basketball recruiting class." That's a tough loss for the Heels. They put a lot of eggs in that basket. I guess they could always give the scholarship to Jeffrey Jordan.

The Daily Roundup: Tuesday

The BEST ACC Sports Coverage!!!

Because we care:

Jim Cramer's MAD MONEY and RADIO recap

With Stewart it's all take, no give: "Driver offers mixed messages."

Bonds' attorney demands leak probe: "Barry Bonds' attorney is asking federal authorities to investigate who told a newspaper that the Giants forwarded the baseball star's medical records to a grand jury investigating him for perjury and tax evasion." Yep. Stay another two years and break the record, Barry.

British may be Tiger's best: "When it's all said and done, Woods might capture more British Opens than Masters." Looks that way. The guy is a better athlete and just plain more intelligent with his game at times.

From the Boston Globe $neaker Wars series - Are you kidding?: Joe Sharkey was 12 when Adidas gave him his first free pair of basketball shoes and apparel.

The Conference Headlines:

Caulton Tudor of the Raleigh news and Observer - ACC due for team to excel: The ACC's football players and coaches, as usual, are talking a mean game as the start of a new season approaches.

ACC poll seems same: "Upon first seeing the preseason poll a year ago at the ACC Football Kickoff, North Carolina coach John Bunting playfully ripped up a copy and Duke coach Ted Roof balled up another. "

FSU's 2005 ACC crown irks foes: "Miami linebacker Jon Beason doesn't even want to say the words."

FSU, Miami to play for ACC title?

Andrew Jones of the Wilmington Star: Fla. St., Miami teams to beat. More from Andrew Jones - ACC Football Kickoff: Day 2

New challenges keep Bowden going on: "Although Bobby Bowden's son, Tommy, is not planning to be a coaching lifer, retirement is not in the vocabulary of the 76-year-old Seminoles coach."

'Noles an ACC favorite, but Bowden's son still hot topic : "Bobby Bowden can detect a why-don't-you-fire-Jeff insinuation from a football field away, never mind what may be happening to his other senses as the Florida State coach approaches his 77th birthday this season."

The two Bowdens

Stormy Forecast: "Coker may be on hot seat if 'Canes don't win ACC titleMiami was supposed to take the ACC by storm when it entered the league two years ago.It hasn't happened, and by the players' admission, the program has lost a little of its swagger in the years since winning the national championship in 2001.

Focus on the present: "Miami coach Larry Coker said he hasn't devoted any thought to his job security: `I'm just making decisions and coaching . . . and trying to win every football game.'"

Coker: Gun use is prohibited among my players : Better tell your players that, Coach.

Omar Kelly's Hurricanes Blog - The Leftovers: I tried to cram every single little bit of news into my story, but there are...

Pressure heaped on Miami

Receiver Moore still in Coker's doghouse : "Miami receiver Ryan Moore's suspension from the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl could carry over into the 2006 season."

Clemson has high hopes for season

Bowden knows value of new instant replay rule: "Be sure that Clemson’s Tommy Bowden led the lobby to include challenges by coaches in the Atlantic Coast Conference’s revised instant replay rule in football this fall."

A more grounded Bowden no longer causes eyes to roll when he vows to run the ball

Bowden having second thoughts about two-a-day practice regimen: "With Tigers facing 11 games before their bye, fresh legs become priority."

Hokies: Thuggish image not justified: Well...that means you have to keep the thugs on the bench. Just about every image is justified when it comes to sports, folks. Schools make mistakes early in trying to build programs and sometimes those images stick. Gotta live with it, and move on Hokies, Seminoles, Hurricanes (notice anything similar about those programs? Let me give you a hint.......they win. Most of the folks calling them thugs, do not win).

Beamer has new issues at Virginia Tech

Beamer: QB competition 'still on'

Beamer OK being behind Hurricanes

Johnson Catches On: "Georgia Tech star receiver Calvin Johnson could be this year's version of Reggie Bush -- an acrobat in cleats who challenges concepts of what humans can do on the field."

Gailey catches Johnson: "Regardless of how stupid people think I am, I do realize ... we should be getting him the ball." That's good, Coach. Now just do it!

Gailey will be 'big picture' guy now: "Chan Gailey had all summer to reconsider his decision to relinquish control of the Georgia Tech offense to coordinator Patrick Nix."

Grateful Friedgen resting easier: "His sleep disorder remedied, top Terp finds new energy."

Looking to rebound, UM expands game plan

Admissions losses don't stun Groh at Virginia.

Amato's season of scrutiny begins - "N.C. State coach unfazed by criticism. April 29 was the best day ever for N.C. State in the NFL draft, but in a way, it has come back to haunt the Wolfpack and coach Chuck Amato." By the way, big hat tip to StateFansNation for the link yesterday. I think he's on the hot seat in a big time way. They need a 4-0 start, getting a big home win against BC. The fans deserve to see a conference "W" at home, Chuck. I see losses to FSU, @Maryland, @Clemson, @North Carolina (of course). They may very well lose to Georgia Tech at home, but that would put them on a 3 game skid heading into the ECU game at the end. I don't want to do that to Chuck. What he absolutely must not do is force his fan base to absorb a loss to ECU or Happy Appy on top of another 6-6 type season. In all honesty, Chuck needs to sweep the State teams this year and finish no worse than 7-5. I have him at 7-5, but he'll lose do something stupid like lose to Southern Miss and beat Clemson, lose to Carolina and beat Florida State etc. We'd love to hear from the NC State fans. Take it to the comments section!!!

N.C. State has made Davis a man: "Even now, A.J. Davis thinks he's known more for the day he chose to attend N.C. State than anything that's happened since. " Has he done anything else of note to be known for?

More from StateFansNation on Tarheerecruitingng: Not all roses? Get over there!!!

Little respect for Big Four: "North Carolina schools are picked at the bottom of their ACC divisions in a preseason media poll. Tar Heels coach John Bunting was not impressed by his team's projected finish in the Coastal Division." Then you should win more games, coach. Why on earth should there be respect for the big four. One school talks a big game and finishes 4th every year, one school talks about building with character players and doing things the right way and then has to run half of the team out of town (it seems), the best of the whole lot is just too small to finish games, and the fourth is just a flat out disgrace to the conference and the overall excellence of their school and athletic program. You want respect? Shut your collective traps and win some games.

Lennox Rawlings of the Winston Salem Journal- GONE SOUTH: Big Four bringing up ACC rear

Dascenzo: Don't be surprised if Heels top Irish: "If timing is everything, mark down this date -- Nov. 4. That's when North Carolina's football team visits Touchdown Jesus, or in other words, Notre Dame Stadium (80,795) to meet the Fighting Irish. " Slow down a bit, Mr. Dascenzo. While I agree that it could happen, lots of things need to go right before Nov. 4 for that scene to take place. Bunting has pulled several rabbits out of his hat, but not on the road against that type team. The last few times they have faced top ten teams on the road, things have gotten very ugly: Last year against Louisville, the year before against Utah, last year in the second half against Virginia Tech.

North Carolina's ACC champions

Bunting likes QB carousel: Quietly, I believe that Bunting is also on the hot seat. If they don't go to a bowl this year, I think he's gone. Even with the improvement on the field (if not in the W's) I think the University will have to make a business move. Too bad.....I've actually grown a bit fond of the guy. This, however, makes me wonder about the guy. How do you not offer the son of a former player who has a 3.5 GPA, runs a sub 4.4 40 yard dash, and is DYING to be a Tar Heel. The kids name is Josh Oglesby, Carolina waited until the last second to offer him, and he committed to Virgina Tech. Good for you, Josh!

Mike Wise of the Washington Post: Krzyzewski Tasked With Reviving Gold Standard

U.S. Coach Krzyzewski Working Overtime: "Mike Krzyzewski's orange folder bulges with notes, diagrams, lists and more notes. ESPN v Barry Bonds

I'm really getting sick and darned tired of ESPN constantly pimping a non-story. They've become the French to Barry Bonds' Lance Armstrong. They're constantly, unceasingly and boringly on his stuff. And by stuff I mean package.
The subject of Barry Bonds never gets old to some people.
It's called projection. De-Nile is not just a river in Egypt.

And then there's this article about Bonds' attorney demanding investigations into the grand jury leaks.
Barry Bonds' attorney is asking federal authorities to investigate who told a newspaper that the Giants had forwarded the baseball star's medical records to a grand jury investigating him for perjury and tax evasion.
This is not a story. This is "dog bites man" not "man bites dog". An attorney is demanding the law be followed with regard to grand jury secrecy. The story is why it takes a private attorney to demand the federal prosecutor, you know: Do. His. Job.

I know the press wants the leaks to continue but they're more concerned with an investigation into potential illegal conduct by Bonds than known, verifiable law breaking done by an as-yet-unknown leaker. I call BS on the MSM. And yes. ESPN is the MSM when it comes to sports reporting.

Jim Cramer's MAD MONEY and RADIO recap.

Tiger triumphs: "Tearful Woods wins with trio of back-9 birdies. Tiger Woods bottled up his emotions when he buried his father in May. Even as he stalked the brown, baked links of the British Open on Sunday, his steely focus never wavered." I hope there are none of you out there who don't think this guy is going to shatter Jack's records.

Peter Schmuck of the Baltimore Sun: Woods deserves a loud cheer, but we need to remain silent
Tiger's thoughts with his father: "'I just wish he could have seen it one more time,' an emotional Woods says."

From the Washington Post: In the Name of the Father

Landis is finally the toast of Tour : "After stunning feats of willpower and woeful cracks of concentration, Floyd Landis' arthritic hip held up and he held on for the ceremonial ride over the cobblestones of the Champs-Elysees. "I kept fighting, never stopped believing," Landis said after leaving the winner's podium with his daughter, Ryan. " Great, great victory by Floyd.

Landis makes their choice easy: "As Floyd Landis crossed the Tour de France finish line Sunday, his devout Mennonite parents were riding their own bicycles home from church in this tiny hamlet in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country."

Coaches worried about the move to 12: "For more than 35 years, an 11-game regular season has been the gold standard for college football teams, but the days of 6-5 records are numbered."

From the Boston Globe - Wading in cesspool: "The system might reek, but there is no stopping cash flowing to amateur basketball players. " PART ONE: $neaker war

Bosh rises among elite: "Ex-Tech player now an NBA all-star and a strong candidate for a spot on Team USA." That team could have 5 ACC players on it out of 12.

The Conference Headlines:

ACC football notes

Caulton Tudor of the Winston Salem Journal - Quality QBs seem in short supply: "The most talented quarterback in the ACC wears No. 3 for Duke -- for Duke's basketball team." That's pretty funny stuff....

Dascenzo: ACC's best? Look south

Canes are full of confidence: "Quarterback Kyle Wright and linebacker Jon Beason said the team's spirits are high after a bad '05 finish and a difficult offseason."

Miami's changes expected: "College football programs that finish with 9-3 records rarely respond with mass firings, but standards are different at Miami."

More Miami Drama: "At Miami, Controversy Remains the Constant"
The days of the University of Miami acting like a hellion football program, one worthy of the "Raising 'Canes" moniker it earned in the late 1980s and early '90s, have largely ended. The residue of that era, fair or not, remains.
So when reports surfaced Friday about a shootout involving Miami linebacker Willie Cooper and defensive back Brandon Meriweather, it might have seemed another instance of Miami acting like, well, Miami. It didn't help that linebacker Willie Williams, one of the most controversial recruits in team history, asked out of his scholarship, a request the school granted and announced July 11.
Aren't you glad that football program is in the ACC? Every conference needs a team with a bad rep, deserved or not.

Willie Williams has lost welcome with UM players: " Miami's administration and coach Larry Coker have left the door open for Willie Williams to return to school, but the teammates of the Super Prep All-America linebacker won't be as receptive." Bad for the Coaches and school, good for the players. Somebody needs to humble this kid. Perhaps his teammates can.

Omar Kelly's Hurricanes Blog- Slamming the Door: "The Chiefs of the Tribe have spoken and it appears Willie Williams has been..."

Clemson has high hopes for season: "As 25th anniversary of school’s national title looms, players at Football Kickoff event focused on ’06."

Adams says sky's the limit for Tigers this season: "Now that they can count the weeks until the first game on one hand and a thumb, the Clemson Tigers realize that shortly speculation and giddiness will give way to reality."

Tigers nip at ’Noles’ heels: "Clemson might be voted preseason favorite in ACC’s Atlantic Division."

Thrust into the limelight: "Clemson lineman Gaines Adams is adjusting to the role of ACC star"

Florida State's Booker claims that 'Noles still set the bar for ACC football : "Even though Florida State lost five times last season and finished with its lowest ranking in the AP poll since 1983, the Seminoles believe they still have an advantage in any war of words with ACC peers. " I guess Conference Championships do speak volumes when it comes to that discussion.

Davis will not let defense be overlooked: "Linebacker Buster Davis calls FSU's defense a 'factory' and hopes to cash in on its ability to churn out first-rounders."

Seminoles know role of favorite: "Florida State has been an ACC preseason favorite since joining the league in the early 1990s."

Tim Stevens of the Raleigh News and Observer: Wolfpack turns focus to state

N.C. State lands QB commitment from Virginia: "N.C. State landed the quarterback it wanted Sunday morning when Richmond (Va.) Collegiate High quarterback Russell Wilson called Wolfpack coach Chuck Amato to commit."

Veteran Deacs are setting sights on postseason: "WakeForest hasn't been to a bowl since 2002." Gotta stop losing close games(like at home against Vandy), Deacs. Great coach, tough kids, supportive fans......gotta stop losing those type games.

Entourage

Any other big fans here?

As an attorney, let me say I don't know how the studio can get out of its bargain with Vinny Chase to make Aquaman II. The lawsuit between Shirley Maclaine and Twentieth Century Fox back in 1970 pretty much settled that one. Vinny would be due the $7.5M if the executive cancels the contract because Vinny wouldn't do breakfast, right?

I mean, unless the studio holds all the rights in the initial contract to renew for A II, wouldn't there be some compensation. Otherwise, wouldn't Vinny be able to sue for lost wages based on detrimental reliance? After all, he gave up the role of Pablo Escobar in Medellin so he lost work.

And what's up with E? I'm just sayin'. Wow.

And now the new episode.

Tiger

I rarely set my alarm for any early morning television watching. But once again I woke early to watch the final round of a British Open in which Tiger Woods was a participant. (And yes, to answer the question so many have E-mailed, I did flip back and forth between the Tour de France during commercial breaks. There, I said it.)

He's the only golfer I consider an athlete first, golfer second. That's not true with regards to any of the other major, or even minor, sports. When I watched Andy Roddick play James Blake earlier I knew I was witnessing two athletes who play tennis. Ditto watching boxing on HBO last night. Ditto my TdeF watching. Those guys are genuinely athletic. But golfers? Not so much. Except Tiger.

People used to say how great Jordan was mentally. And it was true. But he had all the gifts that put him in a position to perform at the top of his chosen sport before he developed the mental toughness. No doubt, that mental toughness helped him nurture those physical gifts into athletic dominance.

But in the chicken-or-egg controversy of mental-or-physical prowess, I'll take physical prowess first. It's the cornerstone of all legends. One has to have the tools before one fashions Michelangelo's David.

And that's what all the top-ranked golfers don't have as compared to Tiger. They just don't have the tools.

Or the 11 majors.

Jim Cramer's MAD MONEY and RADIO recap.

Tour de force by Landis: "With a blistering 80-mile attack over three mammoth Alpine passes, Floyd Landis won the final mountain stage of this year's tour by nearly 6 minutes, regaining much of the time he lost when he suffered a near-total loss of energy on a steep, final climb on Wednesday." This guy would be some story if he wins. God, the French would really hate us then. "American who needs total hip replacement wins the Tour." What a lede that would be.

Tiger soars after finishing with a 25-foot eagle: Realtime update from ESPN. 3 stroke lead through 17 today. He's going to run away with this tournament.

Rick Maese of the Baltimore Sun - MLB teams must pass on Bonds next year: That's complete nonsense. If I were Bonds, after seeing this 3 year witch hunt, the felonious leaking of grand jury testimony, and the sports writers waiting for my demise.....I'd stay until my knees broke completely off. The San Francisco Giants ought to come forward and say that Berry Bonds has a home in that clubhouse for as long as he would like. Don't agree? Take it to the comments section!!!

Peter Schmuck of the Baltimore Sun - Having Bonds take the fall accomplishes nothing at all: Exactly right!

Scandal looming over Graham : "Investigators want to know if the Raleigh coach who first exposed suspect substance OK'd drug use." Nice guy.....most likely, a bad mistake.

Duke picks Danowski for lax job: "Duke is set to introduce longtime Hofstra coach John Danowski as its men's lacrosse coach at a news conference today, a source close to the situation confirmed Thursday night."

Clemson and clover over? Tigers frosh backs off Irish: "With both Clemson and Notre Dame issuing statements Thursday aimed at curtailing allegations about the Fighting Irish’s recruiting tactics, the message was clear."

Other Stuff

You guys are pwn3d. That's what Tiger Woods is saying at the British Open... or as I like to call it... The Tiger Woods Invitational.

Barry Bonds is still a free man. There was no indictment. There's no link because there's no story. It's a dog bites man story when somebody doesn't get indicted despite the best efforts of ESPN to get out in front of the story, a la Dan Rather.

Finally, I gave up on Floyd Landis after watching him crack during yesterday's stage. But today he made an early break and Landis won the stage by 8 minutes. He's now in third place, 30 seconds behind the leader and 18 behind second place. Now it will all come down to tomorrow's time trial. Go Floyd Landis. USA. USA.

Final Zidane Post

This seems like a satisfactory conclusion to the head butt incident.
Former France captain Zinedine Zidane and Italy defender Marco Materazzi were both fined and banned by FIFA on Thursday after the head-butting incident that marred the World Cup final on July 9.

Zidane, who has retired as a player, was fined 7,500 Swiss francs ($6,014) and handed a three-match ban by FIFA's five-man disciplinary committee following his red card for head-butting Materazzi.

As he is no longer a player, he offered to undertake three days of community service on FIFA's behalf as part of their humanitarian activities, which the committee accepted.

The Italian defender, who admitted insulting Zidane, provoking the Frenchman's head-butt, was handed a two-match ban and fined 5,000 Swiss francs ($4,010). He attended a hearing last Friday, but his sentence has been fiercely criticized in Italy.

The bans apply to international competitive matches, even though it is a symbolic ban for Zidane who has confirmed he has no intention of reversing his decision to quit the game.
Three days community service, a small fine and a long walk into retirement as a national hero. Not a bad day's work.

It's Official

Until basketball season starts I'm officially taking over the style/celebrity beat for the BasketBlog. I'm not sure you're interested. I don't care either.

I'm gonna give you attractive women and silly stuff. A healthy dose of both, to be sure.

With that in mind, I give you USA Women's Softball. Here's the roster and here's 2006 World Cup MVP (to my mind, anyway) Jessica Mendoza. She beat the leather off the ball (Editor: Is that supposed to sound kinky?) and played outstanding defense. And yes, I watched several of the games from beginning to end.

(Don't get too excited, though. She's engaged to Adam Burks --even if I'm not sure which one. Perhaps it's to the Stanford MBA student or to the baseball player but I just don't know. Heck, it could be none of the above.)

Our softball team was brilliant, outscoring opponents 59-3 in the six games. Cat Osterman pitched lights out but made what could've been a costly error in the 7th inning. At 6'2" Cat can really bring the heat. (Check the link if you don't believe me.)

Lovieanne Jung played brilliant defense and provided some pop with the bat. Not bad for the 5'6" bombshell who seems practically 'short' among her softball peers.

Even Jennie Finch (6'1"), who had a baby two months ago, contributed.

As you can see, several players contributed. A. Lot.

USA. USA. Etc.

Ok, apparently nobody knows where Willie will land. We reported yesterday that he was heading to West Virginia. We'll stay after it.

Tony Haynes: Cobb, Division 1-AA Champs Gearing Up For Visit to Carter-Finley: "The official date of NC State's homecoming game this fall is November fourth when ACC foe Georgia Tech pays a visit to Carter-Finley Stadium. Redick won't play in USA hoops trials: "Former Duke star J.J. Redick won't suit up when USA Basketball team trials begin Wednesday in Las Vegas because of a herniated disk in his back that also kept his sidelined during Orlando Magic summer league games."

Duke isn't lax in search: "Lacrosse job has several candidates, including Notre Dame coach Kevin Corrigan. A search committee is expected to present its recommendation to Duke president Richard Brodhead later this month."
