Getting your mind right:
The Weekend Smoke from the StogieGuys.com - Stogie Reviews: Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 3 (Cuban). Get over there!!!

Hawaii wary of Georgia: "Hawaii coach June Jones is reluctant to watch any more Georgia game film." Georgia is the team that ought to be wary...

Bowden pitches son Terry for W.Va. job: "Dad's good word to the governor might just be the boost Terry Bowden needs." Back to the future?

Support for Vick misguided: "If Atlanta Falcons players want to show their support for Michael Vick, they can. They can set up informational picket lines at shopping malls." Have to agree with this...not good for job security anywhere in the league.

The conference headlines:
3 arrested in assault on UNC football players: "Two women and one man have been charged with robbing and kidnapping three UNC football players on Sunday and sexually assaulting at least one of them." Very strange case.....

Michael Cunningham: Cupcake wins leave 'Canes bit of a mystery : "Welcome back to big-time college basketball, Miami Hurricanes."

Duke
Duke in the PITTs: Blue Devils blow double-digit lead for first loss of season: "In a sport where two hours of battling back and forth often comes down to two seconds, a loss like the one the Duke Blue Devils suffered Thursday night can be tough to take."

Clemson
Source: Spence to interview at Tennessee: "When suitors come calling, Clemson offensive coordinator Rob Spence continues to listen. Spence could interview for Tennessee’s vacant offensive coordinator position as soon as today, according to a source familiar with the situation."
Scott asks for NFL projection: "Add defensive tackle Dorell Scott to the list of Clemson underclassmen who have sought draft projections from the NFL advisory committee."

Rivers revs Tigers in second half:"Clemson needed a little time to get warmed up after a two-week break for final exams. K.C. Rivers had 21 points and 11 rebounds to help No. 15 Clemson beat Division II Puerto Rico-Mayaguez 90-73 on Thursday in the San Juan Shootout."

Men's basketball Oglesby finds his long range:"Even by his standards, Terrence Oglesby was shocked when he peeked at his feet. A long distance jumpshooter by trade, Oglesby had nailed another lengthy jumper with seconds left in a fall league scrimmage before his senior season at Bradley Central High in Cleveland, Tenn."

Georgia Tech
GRANT OUT: "Senior running back Rashaun Grant (ankle) will miss the Humanitarian Bowl against Fresno State."

North Carolina
UNC hopes to learn from stinker of a win : "The practice didn’t appear to be as brutal as expected. Nobody vomited, at the very least."

NC State
Lowe: Wolfpack needs to mesh: "State, playing Davidson tonight, has used many substitution patterns."

N.C. State Notebook: "Lowe will player hardest workers; coach wants more noise."

Wake Forest

Boston College
Boston College gears up for bowl game: "The mind-set at Boston College is that of any game week. Practices and implementing the game plan."

Maryland

Florida State

Wetherell: Coaches not to blame for academic-misconduct issue: "T.K. Wetherell said he can't predict what the NCAA will do once it has received Florida State's final report early next year regarding academic misconduct among student-athletes."

FSU: Testing scandal complex :"No one asked a Florida State University tutor to divvy out test answers to students. But that's what happened during the fall 2006 and spring 2007 semesters."

DeMercy's drive seems a lot like Wilson's: "Freshman Jordan DeMercy isn't reluctant to send his 6-foot-6, 205-pound frame crashing to the floor. It should look familiar to Florida State basketball fans — right down to the buzz cut."

The Daily Roundup: Thursday

The BEST ACC Basketball Coverage!!!

Getting your mind right:
Thompson Receives Apology: "Ball State apologized to former basketball coach Ronny Thompson after an outside review found "unprofessional behavior" by an employee tainted the school's report to the NCAA on possible rules violations."

The conference headlines:

Andrew Jones, The ACC Insider:
Heels About To Be Ill:"Poor performance Wednesday should make for tough practices."

Cutcliffe the right risk-taker for Duke: "It's a whole new ballgame at Duke these days."
Get over there!!

MANNY NAVARRO - UM forward Hicks moving in right direction : "When Frank Haith made Ray Hicks the first recruit he brought to the University of Miami four years ago, he promised the 6-7, 238-pound Texas forward he would have a chance to be a part of something special before he graduated from college."

North Carolina
UNC struggles past Nicholls State
: "Playing what junior Marcus Ginyard called "our worst game since I've been here,'' top-ranked UNC survived, rather than thrived, in an 88-78 victory. Whether they do either today after coach Roy Williams' practice, though, remains to be seen. "

Williams not pleased with Heels' showing: "There were scoffs at the start time. A 9 p.m. tip for North Carolina against Nicholls State? Was that really necessary for a mundane non-conference game that probably would end in a blowout?"

Wake Forest
Deacons show spark: "Wake Forest cools off South Florida, wins 74-61For the first time since an overtime loss at Vanderbilt two weeks ago, Wake Forest can make a valid case that its best game of the season resulted in a victory."

Duke
Duke adopts Suns' style
:"Duke's offense might look familiar, since it's a version of the one Mike D'Antoni runs with the Phoenix Suns."

Duke to finally meet Pittsburgh on hardwood: "Duke senior DeMarcus Nelson thinks things will get physical tonight in New York, both before and after tip-off of the Blue Devils' battle with a physically imposing Pitt team."

For Duke legend, Pitt-Duke a long time coming :"Sooner or later, I knew this would happen. Duke and Pitt would, finally, play a basketball game and Dick Groat could be a part of it. Twice before I thought this could happen, and Groat's eyes could come close to tearing up, recalling his days as a Blue Devils guard and of that last home game he played."

Duke, Pitt prepare for a Garden party: "Unbeaten teams will play tonight; Devils' Thomas questionable."

Virginia Tech
Hokies' strong finish too much for Flames
:"Deron Washington scored 17 points, and Jeff Allen scored all 10 of his in the second half as Virginia Tech pulled away to beat Liberty 58-46 on Wednesday night."

Virginia

Miami
Miami nearing last year's win total : "The Miami Hurricanes won only 12 games last season."

NC State

Boston College
BC football opens vs. Kent St.: "Boston College will open its 2008 football season Aug. 30 against Kent State at Cleveland Browns Stadium, but the Eagles are still looking for a replacement for Army on the schedule Sept. 13. The Black Knights asked for and received a release from the game."

Football recruit Okpara chooses Boston College over Arkansas: "In the world of big-time college football recruiting, every action has a reaction. Take the series of events that occurred when coach Bobby Petrino bolted from the NFL's Atlanta Falcons in his first season to replace Houston Nutt at the University of Arkansas."

Clemson
Men's basketball Oglesby finds his long range: "Clemson’s long-shot specialist is not afraid to take it deep. Even by his standards, Terrence Oglesby was shocked when he peeked at his feet. A long distance jumpshooter by trade, Oglesby had nailed another lengthy jumper with seconds left in a fall league scrimmage before his senior season at Bradley Central High in Cleveland, Tenn."

O-line ready to stance and deliver: "Clemson coordinator Rob Spence has taken a stance on the effectiveness of his short-yardage rushing offense. For the Tigers’ offensive linemen, the two-point stance has worked just as well as the traditional three-point stance."

Georgia Tech
Looking into the future: "Jackets will preview things to come when Navy faces Utah Thursday in the season's first bowl game."

Florida State
'Noles vow to fight at bowl: "Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden vowed that his team will be competitive in the Music City Bowl despite the loss of 16 available scholarship players, including 12 listed on the first or second team at the end of the regular season."

The Daily Rounup: Wednesday

The BEST ACC Basketball Coverage!!!
PHOTO: MJ rounding out.....his game.

Getting your mind right:
Caulton Tudor of the Raleigh News and Observer - Hoopsville too quiet sans Vitale: "The first time I saw Dick Vitale on a basketball telecast, I instantly hit the mute button so hard that it hurt my thumb."

Andrew Jones, The ACC Insider - Cutcliffe the right risk-taker for Duke: "It's a whole new ballgame at Duke these days."

Star attraction is MJ: "Team's part owner brings attitude to Charlotte Bobcats' workout, talks winning unity. No matter how much the coach would welcome it, Michael Jordan swears this isn't the first step toward a comeback."

Bobcats work to be like Mike
: 'No matter how much the coach would welcome it, Michael Jordan swears this isn't the first step toward a comeback."

Taylor makes Pro Bowl posthumously: Nice move by the fans.

One more tribute:"When he died, Washington Redskins free safety Sean Taylor was leading the NFL in interceptions. When he died, Taylor was having the best season of his NFL career."

The Conference Headlines:
Time kind to Kansas, not GT: "Mark Bradley writes the teams are headed in opposite directions since their last meeting in '05."

Coaches differ on when to lift starters
: "Coaches of top teams try balancing the need to prepare their players for league competition with the desire to keep their stars healthy."

Johnson looks to fill staff: "Current Miss. State def. coordinator Ellis Johnson to interview with Jackets Wednesday."

Another recruit de-commits:"Henry County's Jackson spurns Johnson regime; opts to play for Alabama."

Florida State

FSU suspends 23 players: "The fallout from an academic misconduct case involving Florida State student-athletes is now expected to include game suspensions for 23 football players. That group, which includes 11 players with starting experience, will miss the Music City Bowl..."

Trickett interviews at W.Va.: "Florida State's football practice was a bit quiet on Tuesday — offensive-line coach Rick Trickett was absent as he interviewed for the vacant West Virginia head coaching job."

North Carolina
Trustees give OK to Davis raise

Feeling better : "There's a disconnect between Deon Thompson's expectations and his results so far this season. "I wouldn't say disappointment, but I just thought it would be better than it is right now," North Carolina's starting power forward said. "It's not where I thought I'd be.""

'House of Pain': "There's a reason Danny Green doesn't mind not starting for North Carolina."

Clemson
Tigers lose three starters for bowl game: "Billie, Watkins and Capote will miss the Chick-fil-A Bowl for academic reasons. As Clemson players filed out after Tuesday’s practice, senior linebacker Tramaine Billie drove up to the ramp leading to the locker room."

Wake Forest
Freshman Flash: Teague providing Deacons a spark at wing and point: " If Wake Forest is to make any noise in the ACC this season, it will need all the help it can get from a quiet freshman guard from Indianapolis. Jeff Teague certainly showed what he can do in Sunday's 72-56 victory over Bucknell. And when Wake Forest (6-3) plays South Florida (7-3) at 7 p.m. today at Joel Coliseum, he'll be asked to show it again."

Maryland

Virginia Tech

Foster, WVU still dancing: That sounds like a great fit for WVU...

The Daily Roundup: Tuesday

The BEST ACC Basketball Coverage!!!

Getting your mind right:
Sally Jenkins of the Washington Post - The Double Standard: "The Feds and the public possess a special reservoir of rage and vitriol for Barry Bonds and Marion Jones that is absent for most drug cheats."

Barry Saunders of the Raleigh News and Observer: Duke's decision spineless: "What a crock. Duke University had a chance to do the right thing last week, but instead it did the white thing." Yikes! I wouldn't have hired the UCLA guy either and it's got nothing to do with his color. He couldn't get it done in the football hotbed of California. What makes you think he's going to Durham and turn it around at, perhaps, the toughest job in football? Broadway, however, has been a winner everywhere accecpt UNC. I think, perhaps, taking a winning head coach from an HBCU may have been more humble pie than many of the Iron Dukes would have been able to stomach. Like it or not, the AD has to take all of those things into consideration. Might be a good choice for Duke, but it looks more like the "safe" choice. Don't agree? Take it to the comments section!

EYEING NO. 4: Appalachian State players hope to keep the good times rolling after third-straight title: If that quarterback can stay healthy, there is no doubt they can do it. With a little luck, it can get done. Remember, the two games that they lost this year were without the QB who was out with injury. With him in the line up, Richmond, JMU, and Michigan played them really close. Go for 4, App State. Go for 4!!!

Another shoe drops and the noose gets tighter on Clemmons neck- Roberts admits steroid use :
"Brian Roberts admitted last night that he used steroids "once," in 2003, but said he hasn't used them or any other performance-enhancing drugs since. "I know that by being a professional athlete, I am held to a very high standard. ... However, I am also human and I have made mistakes," Roberts said in a statement."

The conference headlines:

Andrew Jones, The ACC Insider:
Yates To Miss 6-7 Months: "Shoulder surgery shelves UNC quarterback." That opens the door for Paulus.

Duke
Blue Devils dispatch Great Danes easily
: "Coming off an exam break, the Blue Devils tune up for a Thursday showdown in Madison Square Garden with unbeaten Pittsburgh by hitting 15 of 26 3-point attempts."

Nelson's 23 give Blue Devils boost against Albany: "Five different Duke players had led the Blue Devils in scoring through nine games, but the list didn’t include the team’s leading scorer from a season ago."

Miami
Surprising Miami back in Top 25
: "Widely picked to finish last in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Miami Hurricanes didn't have many believers entering the season."

Defensive coordinator moving on, sources say : "The one-year reign of Tim Walton as the Miami Hurricanes' defensive coordinator has ended, according to multiple sources."

Wake Forest
Looking Ahead: Vidovich has WFU soccer in good shape: "The Deacons shed the label of postseason underachievers Sunday with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Ohio State, giving the school its first national championship in men's soccer. The NCAA Tournament appearance was the Deacons' eighth in the past nine years, and it was the fourth consecutive season that they reached at least the third round. But the Deacons were the tournament's No. 1 seed twice previously- in 2002 and 2004 - and failed to win the title either time."

Georgia Tech

Virginia Tech

Tech's Foster pursuing WVU job, agent says: "Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster is lobbying for the open WVU head coaching job, according to his agent, Bob Lattinville."

Clemson
Basketball Purnell hopes to ease Mays back: "With key three game stretch this week, Clemson forward may make return to court. Clemson forward James Mays sounded pessimistic he will be able to play in the San Juan Shootout this week. If the Tigers were not playing three games in as many days, coach Oliver Purnell might have agreed with him."

Football Linebacker casualties play havoc with lineup: "The closer Clemson gets to its bowl game, the more Plan B becomes its only option. B, as in the backups. Between two and four starters are expected to miss the Dec. 31 Chick-fil-A Bowl against No. 22 Auburn."

Virginia

North Carolina
50-YARD LINE: Brown to Miami, but it's not all bad - Thought Carolina was going to snag this kid, #1 recruit in the country. Close.....

UNC awaits decision on Hansbrough
: "North Carolina coach Roy Williams said he won't decide until Wednesday whether forward Tyler Hansbrough, who suffered a slight concussion at Rutgers on Sunday, will play against Nicholls State."

Roy Williams: Hansbrough likely to play:"Tyler Hansbrough is probable for North Carolina's game against Nicholls State on Wednesday night after suffering a slight concussion in Sunday's win over Rutgers."

Yates Undergoes Successful Surgery : "University of North Carolina quarterback T.J. Yates underwent successful surgery on his right shoulder Monday morning at UNC Hospitals."

Florida State
Fisher's contract now official: "While FSU awaits word on the academic front, at least one piece of unfinished business is officially done for Florida State's football program."

Get over there!!!

50-YARD LINE: New Duke coach Cutcliffe has enough to keep him busy the next three weeks

ABOVE THE RIM: Lowe may be too relaxed about record

Wake Forest
Fitting Finish: Win over Ohio State was familiar to seniors

WFU fends off Bucknell: "Switch to a smaller lineup sparks Wake Forest to 72-56 win. Just when it appeared that Bucknell might pull off a big upset yesterday, Wake Forest went small in time to roll to an emotional 72-56 victory in front of 9,128 at Joel Coliseum."

North Carolina
Heels star takes a fall
: "Tyler Hansbrough suffers a mild concussion in No. 1 UNC's victory over Rutgers when he hits his head. The North Carolina forward bangs his head on a cameraman's knee under the basket while trying to take a charge."

Lawson's 26 power UNC over Rutgers; Hansbrough suffers concussion: "On a night of bumps, bruises, cuts and concussions for North Carolina, at least one Tar Heel player reveled in the way his body felt after a dangerous win over Rutgers."

Lawson's on the loose

Duke
Cutcliffe, Duke know recruiting is key
: "David Cutcliffe, center, will make his first recruiting trip for Duke wearing Tennessee orange."

Albany at Duke
: "Albany goes nine deep like Duke. The Great Danes are led by the Iowa-bred, senior duo of Wilson and G Brian Lillis."

Blue Devils get back to business on court: "For college students, fighting human nature is second nature. For college student-athletes, that goes double."

Virginia Tech
Monarchs pluck victory from Hokies
: "Brandon Johnson scored 15 and Abdi Lidonde added 12 to help Old Dominion a to last-minute victory over Virginia Tech 72-69 on Sunday."

Clemson
Recruiting Tigers connect with top RB prospect: "CLEMSON’S TOP RUNNING back prospect this recruiting season is Jamie Harper (6-foot-0, 222 pounds) of Jacksonville, Fla., and the Tigers are in excellent shape with him as the holiday dead period begins."

Bowden may sit Vincent after DUI arrest: "Tommy Bowden backed out of his previous insinuations about the status of a player arrested a week ago, opening the door for the possibility Clemson could be without all three of its starting linebackers for its bowl game."

Spence meant to be a Tiger

Georgia Tech
New Tech coach driven : "Johnson known for being an intense competitor, a man that demands players meet his expectations."

Johnson-Tenuta worthy: "Ramblin' On says it would in Tech's interest to have strong coaches on both sides of ball."

Florida State

The BEST ACC Basketball Coverage!!!
PHOTO: This may be a very familiar look for tonight's notionally televised game. Funny that the Appy's might start and end the year defeating the winged helmet. The ACC Basketblog (even Catamount Birkel) Salutes you. GO APP!!!

March to the Championship: Appalachian State vs. Delaware, TONIGHT!!!
Mountaineers build to moment on national stage: "Season that includes win at Michigan needs win in Chattanooga. The story Corey Lynch enjoys most happened during the Major League Baseball playoffs in Ohio State-obsessed Cleveland, just weeks after Appalachian State had opened the college football season with its now-famous upset of Michigan."

Appalachian is hoping to finish what it started
: "Appalachian State University's memorable defeat of the Wolverines helped define the country's sporting landscape this year."

'Quest for 3' most important to App: "At Appalachian State, it's called "The Game For The Ages." Fans wanting a way to commemorate the Mountaineers' shocking upset of Michigan can get limited edition artwork, travel mugs, posters and T-shirts."

Flacco, Cuff have been heart of Blue Hens' offense: "Towering quarterback, versatile running back have combined to account for 64 TDs."

Expecting some fireworks: "Appalachian, Delaware feature high-powered offenses."

Getting your mind right:
Experts Doubt Report: "The Mitchell report gives a general road map for improving baseball's drug testing, but prescribes no timetable and few specific orders." Isn't it odd that as soon as King Roger gets named, everyone wants to start doubting the validity of the report. We heard an ESPN commentator say this: "The very fact that Clemons and his legal team have vehemently denied these allegations must raise doubts as to the findings." Really....When Mike Vick said "These allegations are false and I look forward to clearing my good name" did that raise doubts as to the feds case against him? When Bonds allegedly said "I have never knowingly taken steroids"....and has publicly said "I have never failed a test" did that raise doubts as to truth of the allegations lodged against him? Not so sure why the media rushes to the side of "mercy, patience, and letting time tell us the truth" with Clemons, but takes out the pipes and blow torches on Bonds and Vick. Won't time reveal the complete truth on all such matters. Don't agree? Take it to the comments section.
Steroid Report Names Star Players
Complete Mitchell Report (PDF)
Names in the Probe

Thomas Boswell: The Rocket's Descent-"Roger Clemens joins Barry Bonds in the slow burn that lasts a lifetime and then, after death, lingers as long as the game is played."

Bonds Might Have Been Warned of Tests : "Barry Bonds and his supporters often pointed to the fact that the home run king never flunked a drug test administered by Major League Baseball. The Mitchell Report suggests why: it appears Bonds received advanced warning of two tests in 2003." Interesting...interesting...

Coaching carousel is turning
: "Terry Bowden, a college football analyst and former Auburn coach, calls it "a new sport.""

Spotlight to shine bright on Bobcats: "ESPN experiment to have 24/7 coverage from Charlotte. Lights, camera, Bobcats. When the boss says ESPN gets all-access, then ESPN gets all-access. That means television, radio and the Internet. It means shaking up the normal routine of a home game day. It also means national exposure like the Charlotte Bobcats have never experienced." Sounds cool.

The Conference Headlines:
Grobe is latest coach linked to Michigan job: Arkansas ain't Michigan. If this is true, and they make him the offer and he decides to go you really can't be mad at him despite his professions of love for the players at Wake. Michigan is Michigan. Here's hoping he stays in the ACC!!!

Dascenzo: Cutcliffe gets praise from elder Manning :"Archie Manning was in his final day of jury duty, and his voice crackled with a slow drawl and a sound of relief."

Valuable Lessons: Deacons hope that their experience will pay dividends :"Wake Forest can move a step closer to its first national championship in men's soccer today if it can get past a hot Virginia Tech team in the NCAA College Cup semifinals in Cary. Second-seeded Wake Forest, the highest seeded team left among the final four, will play No. 11 Virginia Tech at 5 p.m. in the first of two games at the SAS Soccer Complex. Unseeded Massachusetts will play No. 5 Ohio State, the Big Ten champion, in the second game at 7 p.m., and the winners will meet at 3 p.m. Sunday."

Andrew Jones, The ACC Insider:
Miami Keeps ACC Unbeatens At Four: "Hurricanes pick up big road win plus ACC and the RPI.

Duke's Thomas Injured: "Sprained ankle could keep sophomore from playing against Albany."
Get over there!!!

Duke
Cutcliffe, Dorrell atop Devils' list: "David Cutcliffe and Karl Dorrell have emerged as the top two candidates, in that order, as Duke’s search for its next football coach begins to show signs of winding down."

Pocius done for season with ankle injury : "Duke junior Martynas Pocius has been dealt another tough break, but Pocius is determined to view it as a potential big break."

The Daily Roundup: Thursday

The BEST ACC Basketball Coverage!!!

March to the Championship: Appalachian State vs. Delaware
Finishing Touch: Appalachian State's Touchstone will wrap up his stellar career in FCS championship game :"Jerome Touchstone's first trip to Chattanooga wasn't much fun. He didn't see Rock City, and his team got rocked. As a freshman cornerback in a young and porous Appalachian State defense, Touchstone was part of a unit that gave up a school-record 540 passing yards in a 59-56 loss to the Chattanooga Mocs. That loss ended all playoff hopes for the Mountaineers in 2004, but Touchstone and team soon returned to Chattanooga for big-time vindication. They won a national title here the next year."

App State foe knows upsets: "Before seeing a second of videotape on the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens, Appalachian State football coach Jerry Moore understood what his Mountaineers will be up against Friday night when they play for a third consecutive NCAA Football Championship..."

Mountaineers' catalyst
: "Quarterback Edwards makes Appalachian State's prolific offense tough to stop."

Football career over for Woazeah: "Mountaineers' Moore suspends senior starter for violating team rule." Big dummy....come on man!?!?! Why do something crazy 2 days before playing for it all!?!?!?!?
Getting your mind right:
Petrino's tactic was cowardly: "The NFL is no place for babies. The NFL is no place for coaches who can't stand unrelenting pressure. It's not a place for someone looking for a big payday and limited adversity."

Jilted Blank hurt himself: "Petrino didn't hire himself, writes Terence Moore; the owner and GM McKay foolishly fell for him." Here's another take on the story - The inside story on Petrino's ugly exit

Jones stripped of medals : "Don't look for Marion Jones' name in the Olympic record books any more. As far as the IOC is concerned, her five-medal performance at the 2000 Sydney Games never happened." Sad....very sad..

NFL disability process streamlined : Let's see how the players feel about it...

The conference headlines:
ACC football finalsin good hands here - Tom Sorensen: Any big college game is good for Charlotte. We have to hope that when the ACC football championship game finally comes to town in 2010 it qualifies as big.

NC State
Fowler says Pack will work it out
: "N.C. State athletic director Lee Fowler played college basketball at Vanderbilt and coached it as an assistant at Memphis. But he is not offering any unsolicited advice to Wolfpack coach Sidney Lowe despite State's mediocre start this season."

Boston College
UMass beats BC in men's basketball: "Perhaps they will meet again in March when the stakes will be higher, befitting postseason basketball. But for Boston College and the University of Massachusetts, last night's 13th Commonwealth Classic was an intriguing early pit stop between teams that began the season with low expectations (from outside their locker rooms, at least) and have started with surprising surges."

Maryland
Terps Lose at Home: "Maryland suffers its fourth non- conference home loss in the last 19 season, shooting 40 percent and committing 15 turnovers in a 61-55 loss to Ohio Wednesday night."

Florida State
Road games all about RPI: "Heading from Hinkle Fieldhouse on Butler's campus, it's pretty much a straight shot to Conseco Fieldhouse once you turn south on Meridian Street in Indianapolis."

Graduating big deal for FSU players: "The goal is for Florida State football players to hear their names called at graduation before they are announced during the NFL Draft."

Miami
Unbeaten, untested : "The Hurricanes are 8-0, but they will get an indication of how good they really are Thursday night when they play Mississippi State. 'I think it's a good assessment in terms of us playing on the road on their court,' UM coach Frank Haith said."

Brains with the brawn : "Northwestern linebacker Sean Spence, a UM commitment, has anchored the Bulls defense with his mental and physical talents."

Clemson
Tigers prep for a new offense: "Auburn hires a new pass-happy assistant, but little will change for the bowl. When Tommy Bowden was hired to be Auburn’s offensive coordinator before the 1990 Peach Bowl, he did little more than serve as a fly on the wall."

Georgia Tech
Johnson's deal has clauses: "Hefty buyouts will be imposed if new Georgia Tech coach leaves before seventh year."

Brooks, Walker honored: "Jackets' punter, defensive tackle named to AP All-America second, third teams respectively."

Duke
Dorrell remains in mix at Duke
: "Former UCLA head coach Karl Dorrell continued to be the focus of the search for a new Duke football coach on Wednesday, two days after he met with Duke representatives to discuss the job that came open when Ted Roof was fired on Nov. 26."

Vols' Cutcliffe latest to interview for Duke job : "Tennessee offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe interviewed for Duke's vacant head coaching job in Durham on Wednesday, multiple sources close to the situation confirmed." He'll be one good season and done, folks. Go young or really seasoned (last stop kind of guy). Nothing in between.

The Daily Roundup: Wednesday

The BEST ACC Basketball Coverage!!!

Countdown to the Championship - Appalachian State vs. Delaware
Mood upbeat for ASU three-peat: "Football team heads to Chattanooga."

Delaware has shown resilience this season: "Blue Hens have overcome hurdles on the way to FCS title game."

Larry Holmes Takes Spot in Boxing Hall: Has anyone ever seen the Eddie Murphy skit on Larry Holmes. Truly a funny thing to see.

Getting your mind right:

Sally Jenkins of the Washington Post - Wishing for the Past: "The old college football bowl system had flaws, but it was infinitely more satisfying than this illegitimate series of billboards with no champion."

The conference headlines:

Dascenzo: Neuheisel says he is interested:" It has been 16 days since Duke fired football coach Ted Roof, and look what we have learned? Paul Johnson is a clever character who can take flights to Dallas and Durham and land a better-paying job in Atlanta, even though his name isn’t Randy Edsall or Rick Neuheisel." That's interesting...very interesting.

Duke
Dorrell talks to Duke
: "Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson as well as former UCLA coach Karl Dorrell visited Duke on Monday as the search for a new Duke football coach passed its 14th day.
Four wins, three losses, almost too many questions to ponder and answer. For N.C. State, that's the situation after a humiliating 23-point loss at Michigan State, followed by a 75-69 loss at East Carolina on Saturday that arguably was the program's worst in more than 20 years. "

From the StogieGuys - Stogie Reviews: EO 601 Serie “Green” La Fuerza. Get over there!

Community mourns former Ga.Tech star Marbury's dad
: "A standing-room-only crowd packed the funeral for Stephon Marbury's father on Thursday, including famous basketball players and residents who considered "Mr. Don" Marbury the mayor of their close-knit, hardscrabble Brooklyn neighborhood."

Olson won't coach this season
: "Arizona basketball coach Lute Olson said Thursday he would extend his leave of absence through the end of this season, citing undisclosed family matters that require his attention." Any of you Basketbloggers have the scoop on this?

Arkansas Football Coach Search Drags On : "First basketball, now football. Another coach has spurned Arkansas. Wake Forest's Jim Grobe was the latest to turn down the Razorbacks after he appeared to be headed to Fayetteville. The Razorback Foundation, a private fundraising arm for the University of Arkansas, had actually approved a salary supplement for the Wake Forest coach, but Grobe was still with the Demon Deacons on Thursday."

The conference headlines:
ACC year in review: "Coach of the Year: Frank Beamer, Virginia Tech Beamer and his staff showed once again why they are the cream of the ACC crop. Virginia Tech has a plodding running game, shoddy pass protection, a pair of quarterbacks with accuracy issues, and its defense has been without injured standout linebacker Vince Hall."

'Herbivores' eat up Sendek's program
: "Former N.C. State coach Sendek has found a basketball home at Arizona State where his soft-spoken monotone, highbrow vocabulary, dry wit and 3-point bombing style seem to suit the locals just fine." That's great...glad he's doing well.

DASCENZO: His decision proves that money isn't everything : "A Wake Forest grad I know had a huge smile on his face Thursday. "Bigger's not always better," he said. "Jim Grobe is still our coach.""

Lenox Rawlings: WISE CALL: Arkansas' track record pretty weak - "Jim Grobe is a triple threat. He can coach, he can model rumpled sweatshirts and he can cause irregular heartbeats faster than lightning. When Wake Forest fans discovered that Grobe was weighing Arkansas' $2.2 million offer, the common reactions included arrhythmia and a real sense of football doom. His name had been attached to other coaching searches, from Baylor to Nebraska and beyond the swaying wheat, but this time Razorbacks backers assumed they had their man."

Wake Forest

Grobe happy to stay at Wake: "Arkansas was a terrific opportunity for Jim Grobe, but Wake Forest is where he'd rather coach."

Clemson
Bowl offers another turning point: "Second trip to Atlanta provides recruiting publicity; Harper, Kelly to feel out NFL draft. The timing felt right for the Chick-fil-A Bowl to pursue Clemson again. Four years had passed. And coach Tommy Bowden’s future was back in limbo."

Georgia Tech

North Carolina
Davis is not going hog-wild
: "Football coach Butch Davis says he won't leave North Carolina for Arkansas or any other program."

Heels' Davis not headed to Arkansas: "Butch Davis made his most definitive commitment to North Carolina yet on Thursday. When the Tar Heels' football coach was asked by reporters to say not only that he wasn't interested in Arkansas, his alma mater, but that he wouldn't listen to any other coaching offers, his reply was, "You've got it. Exactly what you just said.""

Yates to have surgery on shoulder
: "UNC quarterback T.J. Yates will undergo arthroscopic surgery on Dec. 17 to repair "tissue trauma" within his right shoulder joint."

Miami
UM's Phillips leaving for NFL : "The University of Miami will be without one of the nation's finest defensive backs next year. Kenny Phillips, a 6-2, 211-pound safety out of Miami Carol City High, will forgo his senior season to enter the NFL Draft, his mother said Thursday night."

The BEST ACC Basketball Coverage!!!

Getting your mind right:
From the Arkansas Democrat Gazette: LIKE IT IS : The waiting is over; UA finds its man in Grobe : "A University of Arkansas private fundraising arm approved a salary supplement Wednesday for Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe, a strong indication that Grobe will replace Houston Nutt as coach." .....and this is why you can't trust ANY football coach. It's not a done deal yet but it's not looking good. ACC fans, remember this when you get attached to your coach: It's ALWAYS about the money and opportunity to do something "bigger." We feel for all of these Wake fans who want to desperately buy in to this notion of loyalty from their coaches and players who say "Wake is special...I'm not looking for anything else." Wake plays big time basketball and is now on the sidewalk for big time football and the recruits that come with it. Big time players and big time coaches are, 99% of the time, open to bigger and "better" opportunities. Never, EVER trust a thing that comes out of their mouths when it comes to staying at your school (Unless they have the tenure of Bowden, Williams (but only @ UNC and that's only if the Kansas job does not open back up and Dean is dead), K, Peterno, etc.). This is example #1. You will see example #2 once LSU finishes off Ohio State and, all of a sudden, Miles begins to have second thoughts.......

The 20 Ugliest Campuses in America according to Campus Squeeze. Guess which ACC School made the list at #7?

Strange days around the college gridiron: "Arkansas' odd pursuit of Tommy Bowden this week raised the level of absurdity on the most bizarre college football season in memory." Man...for the ACC to be as "bad" in football as people say, this SEC school is knocking on everydoor on the block for our coaches.

Not odd at all: Top 10 school, ACC, the potential for resources for the right coach, the potential for strong fan support if the new coack can win 3 games in their first year and 6 in year 5. Why not?

Spurrier to Duke? Naaaaah. : Perhaps his son?

Clemson
Leverage pays off for bowden: "Not for a second did Tommy Bowden intend to leave Clemson for Arkansas. Instead, by interviewing with Arkansas, he masterfully worked the college football coaches’ leverage game into a sweet deal that brings him all kinds of security at Clemson."

Bowden reaches for the next level: "The threat, whether real or imagined, jolted Clemson University officials into the realm of reality. They suddenly faced the possibility that Tommy Bowden might bolt for greener pastures, and the notion created this question: What does Clemson want from its football coach?"

Billboard no laughing matter: "A CLEMSON BOOSTER in North Carolina has created quite a stir in the wake of Clemson’s football victory against South Carolina 10 days ago. He paid for a billboard on I-26 near Harbison that has both Clemson and USC officials upset."
