Doctor: former Arizona coach Lute Olson had stroke: "Lute Olson's doctor said Tuesday that the former Arizona basketball coach had a stroke within the last year and he advised him to retire. Not surprising...I saw him shaking during his ESPN interview last week and thought that something was wrong.

ACC Now looks at UNC, Duke and N.C. State

The conference headlines:
Aaron McFarling of the Roanoke News: Parity rules in wacky ACC

Virginia

Georgia Tech
Still fight in Jackets: "DE Johnson isn't guaranteeing a win but says he's "excited to prepare for Florida State.""

Boston College
Turnovers are tormenting Eagles: "Suddenly, what seemed so certain only a few days ago, now should give Boston College fans reason to pause. Officially, BC needs one more victory to become bowl eligible for the 10th straight season. When that victory comes is anyone's guess."

Miami
Looking for payback: "The Hurricanes are in the thick of the ACC race. Now they prepare for Virginia, the team that embarrassed them in the Orange Bowl finale."

UM-Wake Forest thoughts : "It wasn't pretty. It wasn't a dominant performance. But Saturday's 16-10 win against Wake Forest at Dolphin Stadium was the third consecutive victory for this young ..."

UM men's basketball picked fourth on ACC Media Day: "Hurricanes guard Jack McClinton was picked to the All-ACC First Team, and the Canes were picked to finish fourth in the ACC."

Wake Forest
Wake defense feels lack of turnovers
: "Reflecting on their 16-10 football loss to Miami on Saturday, Wake Forest defensive players wondered aloud how they let the game pass without creating a turnover."

Clemson
Defensive stars near commitments: "DEFENSIVE END CHRIS Bonds (6-foot-4, 283 pounds) of Richland Northeast and defensive back Devonte Holloman (6-3, 210) of South Pointe are nearing decisions. Each took an official visit to SEC schools this weekend, and each might take one more visit before making a choice."

Eagles stay wary of Tigers: " At the ACC’s preseason media kickoff, Boston College coach Jeff Jagodzinski said Clemson possessed the most gifted team in the league."

Duke
Duke Clipboard

Monday Morning Quarterback: Duke : "If you ask our players," Duke coach David Cutcliffe said, "the game never was in doubt." Duke's White team crushes Blue team in intrasquad game: "The upperclassmen are definitely ahead of the youngsters. And for a team coming off the kind of campaign Duke had last season, that's not such bad news."

Getting your mind right:
Top 25 games: "Game of the week LSU 27, Florida 24 - The Tigers do well in The Swamp in a meeting of the last two national champions. The No. 11 Gators are tough, including Heisman-winning quarterback Tim Tebow, but the feeling here is that for this week, at least, the No. 4 Tigers are tougher."

Ravenscroft's Kelly commits to Duke: "Ryan Kelly quickly rose through the recruiting ranks to the point where schools like Duke would consider him, and then Kelly slowed down."

The conference headlines:
LENOX RAWLINGS of the Winston Salem Journal: "Power Shift: Deacons sit in catbird seat; Tigers in trouble"

Morris of The State: Ugly loss could signal Bowden’s end: "Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden throws up his hands after a three-and-out in the first quarter of their game. If the loss to Maryland nearly two weeks ago served as the funeral for Clemson’s football season, then Thursday’s defeat at the hands of Wake Forest served as the graveside service."

Single-minded Wake dusts off single-wing
: "While Wake Forest was turning back the clock on its offense by 60 years; Clemson was going all the way back to the Stone Age."

Sammy Batten of the Fayetteville Observer: Prime time ACC short on offense

Wake Forest
Deacs smack Tigers: "Wake Forest seared a familiar brand into Clemson's hide with last night's 12-7 victory at BB&T Stadium."

Demon Deacons' late rally tames Tigers
: "And though all the kinks were not removed, the Deacs overcame their offensive deficiencies - mainly an inability to get in the end zone - and rallied late in the fourth-quarter for a 12-7 victory over Clemson at BB&T Field."

Clemson
Season slipping awayTigers have no answer for Wake Forest, fall 12-7. So long driver's seat. Hello, hot seat. If Clemson players thought the meltdown that followed the Maryland loss was troubling, they had better learn to tune out the noise for at least another week."

North Carolina
No Penn State series for UNC -- yet
: "On his weekly radio show, Penn State coach Joe Paterno referenced playing North Carolina in football in the future, but UNC associate athletics director Larry Gallo said Friday morning nothing has been scheduled."

Irish eye return to top in football

The photo lay tucked away in Berry's belongings, forgotten for more than a half-century before he found it last year, a discovery that led Berry to search for his former teammate, whom he hadn't seen in 50 years."

Simpson's future now hangs on armed robbery appeal: "O.J. DECISION TIME MAY be coming soon for South Pointe standout defensive back Stephon Gilmore (6-foot-2, 195 pounds). He made an official visit to Alabama over the weekend and could have an announcement Friday. Gilmore also has taken official visits to USC and Tennessee. He told the Alabama fan website BamaOnLine.com after his visit to Tuscaloosa that he might take an official visit to Clemson before making a decision. But if he decides not to, he will hold a press conference Friday and announce for...

Clemson seeks its usual bounce after an upset loss: "Tommy Bowden remembers shaking Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe’s hand, and then time standing still as he inched toward the stadium portal where Clemson exited."

Great expectations, disappointment for Tigers: "To think what Clemson fans might have avoided had Tommy Bowden been the one seeing red. How close were the Tigers to having a new coach this season, thus avoiding the annual hot-seat speculation amid another season of ups and downs?"

Merling far from chicken on field
As rookies, you don’t have much choice. The veterans want food for the plane, you buy food for the plane. Yet you do it begrudgingly, and you bring the bare minimum.

Miami
Miami Hurricanes look ahead to UCF : "Let's look ahead: At 2-3, the Hurricanes take a week off from ACC play to take on the UCF Knights, also 2-3, Saturday at Dolphin Stadium. The Hurricanes' secondary, which has struggled all season, might catch a break from the Knights, who are ranked 109th in passing offense and have spent the year with an uncertain quarterback situation. UCF, like Miami, has had an inconsistent season — taking USF to the brink and losing in overtime at home, but also losing 58-13 to a mediocre UTEP team. This will be the first meeting between the schools."

Colin McCarthy out for year: "Coach Randy Shannon just announced linebacker Colin McCarthy is out for the year..."

Virginia Tech
Fits to a T: "Tech center Ryan Shuman plays a retro style of football, right down to his equipment."

Georgia Tech
Tech ready for Blue Devils: "With a bye week, the Jackets spent recuperating, going over basics in preparation for Duke."

North Carolina

No. 23 UConn plays a little football, too

Maryland
A Kicking Community: "Maryland kicker Obi Egekeze has come out of the worst slump of his life, thanks in no small part to a support system of place kickers."

Clemson
Coaches content to stay with one QB: "Prep star Willy Korn hopes for playing time but not at the expense of the team. When Tommy Bowden revealed that Clemson’s coaching staff was examining personnel changes this week, the offensive line was not on the minds of most media members. Reporters headed in the direction of second-string quarterback Willy Korn, who held court long enough to dispel the notion his role had changed."

Practice report: Tigers focused on Wake: "Clemson fans may still be down about Saturday’s loss to Maryland, but it appears their football team has turned the page to No. 25 Wake Forest."

Morris: Calls for Bowden's job are premature: "Clemson coach Tommy Bowden pleads his case with an official during Saturday's loss to Alabama, which knocked the Tigers out. Here we go again. The 10th annual "Tommy Bowden Must Go" campaign has kicked into high gear among Clemson fans in the wake of the loss to Maryland. Please. Stop with all that.

Florida State
Seminoles beat: Full squad to be back in play at Miami after academic fraud scandal: "For the first time in a long time, Florida State will not be missing players due to suspensions relating to the university's academic-fraud scandal. The last of the formerly suspended players, DT Paul Griffin and FB Marcus Sims, are returning for the game Saturday against Miami."

Duke
Duke recruiting looks peachy
: "Duke heads to Georgia Tech on Saturday in an important early-ACC-season game. The meeting highlights the changing nature of Duke football — the team that will play in Atlanta is heavy with players from Georgia, a state former coach Ted Roof focused on in recruiting."

Devils' holder has support of wife, brother-in-law in program: "Like any wide receiver worth his salt, Duke senior Ryan Wood loves to get his hands on the ball. These days, he's not getting the ball on touchdowns, but he is touching it after every Duke touchdown."

Duke will host regional
: "Duke, UCLA, Michigan and Southern Illinois will serve as the regional hosts for the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer."

Boston College
BC's Akins cornering the market on roles: "Finally. After four seasons that produced only five starts, "jack-of-all-trades" Kevin Akins has a new identity: starter at cornerback."

N.C. State's O'Brien not sure what he's in for:"All week, Tom O'Brien has studied tapes of Boston College's first four games, and he is still uncertain of what he has seen."

NC State
Wilson 'wills' himself back
